12 Monkeys
[DVD Info]

Although based in 2035, most of the human race was wiped out in 1996 by an organization called the "12 Monkeys" leaving animals to rule the remains of the world. The surviving humans are forced to live underground in cages until they are picked to "volunteer" to go up to the surface and pick out animal specimens to figure out why they survived and most of the human population didn't. James Cole (Bruce Willis) gets chosen and ventures out into the upper realm. When he returns he doesn't show any signs of mental instability and has a knack for remembering bits of information so the scientists want to send him back to 1996 to find out who the 12 Monkeys were and why the disease was spread.

When sent back the scientist’s accidentally send him to 1990 and he's put in a mental institution for talking about the future and mass destruction. There he meets Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) a doctor who swears they've met before, and Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt) a patient in the mental institution who has a very powerful father. As the story unfolds both you and James wonder if he really is from the future or if he has gone crazy. Who are the 12 Monkeys? do they exist? If they do...why are they hell-bent on destroying the human race?

"Psychology is the new religion, we say what's right and what's wrong...and I'm begining to lose my faith." ~Kathryn Railly.

While watching this movie you lose track of time. It seems to start and finish in an instant. It's very involving and seems to ask you what the answer is. Everything is a mystery until the movie decides to tell you what's going on. Bruce Wills was good (not a big fan, personally) and Brad Pitt played the role of a mentally unstable person beautifully. All his scenes are hilarious. It's a good movie that unfolds well and is thought provoking. Although, I wouldn't go as far as to call this a "psychological thriller" it's an awesome movie. However, if some dill-weed told you how it ends, then the end is very anti-climatic and you go through the whole movie assuming it ends how it ends (Fight Club as the same kinda thing going on) and you’re not surprised by the end. So don’t let anyone spoil it for you before you see it! Also, the movie poster is quite amusing and not at all what the movie is about. Because of this, the jury gives this flick:
