Session 9

A group of men from HAZMAT are employed to take care of some asbestos in an old insane asylum/hospital before it is to be restored. The Danvers State Hospital was built in 1871 and was closed down in the 80’s because of taxes. There’s also another reason that not many people know about. The hospital was the first to try an experimental way to help patients remember repressed memories. In the 70’s there was a girl named Patricia, who, through this experiment, remembered that her father would rape her…but not just once…or twice…but every night…with her entire family watching. They’d eat baby hearts and other satanic things. But it turns out that she was just imagining it…because of this experimental procedure. Gordon (Peter Mullan), the owner of the HAZMAT Company, promises the town that they’ll get the whole place asbestos free in a week (even though it’s a 3 week job). With him he has Jeff (Brendan Sexton III), a young kid with an angry mullet, Mike (Stephen Gevedon), a lawyer drop out, Hank, a slacker who needs a plan, and Phil (David Caruso), the second owner of the hazmat company. As they’re cleaning up, Mike stumbles on a box labeled “evidence.” When everyone else leaves he starts to listen to “sessions” of Mary Hobbes, a woman who was committed to the hospital, she has multiple personalities. While Mike becomes obsessed with these tapes, Hank finds a wall full of old coins and gold teeth (and human hair). That night he goes back to get his new found treasure, he ends up disappearing. Everyone seems to have secrets in this old hospital…but who has deadly secrets and what do these “sessions” have to do with it?
"Mullet Boy is party in the back...but I'll make sure he's all business in the front." ~Mike.
None really.
This movie was reeeeeally suspenseful. I heard that this was one of the scariest movies to come out lately (and since “The Ring” is my bar…I thought…nothing could be scarier than that! I have to see this.). So I waited. I waited at the edge of my chair. I started to psyche myself out, Mike is almost to session 9. Eeeek. This is going to be good. Well…the suspense in this movie is pretty nail biting…BUUUUUT…once you either figure it out…or had it spelled out for you (which is what I needed) then it’s not that scary. The scariest thing is not knowing what the hell is going on. The ending wasn’t anti-climatic…(in fact it was good) but it was not scary. I was expecting a little more, I guess. Something that was creepy (besides it being an old asylum…those scare me ;_; ) was hearing someone change from their different multiple personality. That whole aspect really reminded me of “The Ring” so I thought it’d have more to do with the movie. Oh well. Don’t see this movie if you hate horror movies or suspense or movies that could actually happen. Do see it if you liked “The Ring” or any type of creepy movie like that. The violence was minimal…it was mostly insinuated. This is the type of movie that will get under your skin after you watch it. Because of this, the jury gives this flick:
