Spellbound
[DVD Info]

This is a documentary following 8 children/teens Harry Altman, Angela Arenivar, Ted Brigham, April DeGideo, Neil Kadakia, Nupur Lala, Emily Stagg, and Ashley White who have been narrowed down from 9 million kids to 249 to compete in the national spelling bee and win the title of best speller.

This was interesting. It almost seemed like a "mock"-umentary due to how serious these people were about spelling bees but it was actually a documentary. It had its comedic points but besides that it's kinda boring (okay…make that REALLY boring). It's quite like something you'd see on the discovery channel but instead of being about lions it's about spelling bees. Yeah...spelling bees. The documentary pulls you in enough to want to know who wins and you're kinda rooting for certain people but the journey to the end is almost painful (almost). Although you have to respect those kids...I woulda been kicked off on my first word. This is recommended for people who either really like spelling bees (and watches them when they're on TV) or for people who like documentaries. Otherwise...you'll find yourself counting the number of speckles on the ceiling for 97 minutes, stopping to chuckle here and there at the seriousness of it all. Because of this, the jury gives this flick:
