Starship Troopers

[DVD Info]
In the future, the humans will be constantly fighting. Not with each other, but with a race called the Arachnids. The Arachnids are bugs that have a vendetta against humans and like to send asteroids from their endless supply to earth. On earth, in order to become a citizen you must join the Federal Service for two years. Without citizenship you cannot vote and it’s hard to do everyday things like getting a license to have children or get into politics. In Buenos Ares, South America we met a group of teens who are graduating high school. Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) is a handsome, well liked senior whose parents aren’t citizens. He’s in love with Carmen. Carmen Ibanez (Denise
Richards), has her eyes on the prize. Although she’s dating Johnny, she doesn’t seem to care for him much. Her highest priority is to get into flight academy and become a pilot for the federation. Carl Jenkins (Neil Patrick Harris) is psychic and can communicate with animals with his mind. He also wants to join the Federation after high school. Dizzy Flores (Dina Meyer) is head over heels in love with Johnny and would do anything to be with him.
After graduation Johnny, Carl, and Carmen sign up for the Federation. How they scored on their tests determines where they were placed. Carmen gets accepted into flight academy, Carl gets put into military intelligence, and Johnny…gets to be mobile infantry. They know they’ll probably never see each other again but they make a pact to be friends forever and go their separate ways. Even though Johnny’s parents are totally against him joining (and cut him off financially) he goes anyway. When he arrives in bootcamp he discovers that Dizzy has followed him there and even got transferred to his company. He gets angry and tells her to leave him alone. Carmen is doing well in flight academy and doesn’t seem to miss Johnny that much, and later breaks up with him. Johnny soon makes squad leader of his company but after live ammunition training goes wrong he’s stripped of his leadership and has to endure administrative punishment, 10 lashes…but after his punishment, he decides to leave, walking down washout lane. Right before he walks through the doors he finds out that the bugs have sent an asteroid and its wiped Buenos Ares off the map and the humans are going to war. With nothing more to lose, Johnny changes his mind and joins his friends in war. Will they be able to defeat to bugs when they obviously out number them?
In the future, boys and girls shower together in bootcamp.
Practicing with live ammunition is a bad idea.
Lower South America is full of white, rich people with hispanic last names.
Guns have two settings. Maim and Kill.
"Violence has resolved more conflicts than anything else. The contrary opinion that violence doesn't solve anything is mearly wishful thinking at its worst!" ~Jean Rasczak.
Nothin' really...
First of all…if these bugs are so dangerous and it’s obvious that the guns the humans are using are not very efficient…why don’t they just NUKE the planet the bugs are from. Just periodically drop an A-bomb on the planet until they stop attacking. Second…if these bugs are so unintelligent and whatnot…why would they be attacking earth? They must have a reason…and reason requires thought…which requires an active brain that does more than just keep them alive. It’s laughable to think that humans would be so arrogant that they’d think these bugs were mindless creatures who just hurl asteroids at Earth for no apparent reason. Finally…you notice in sci-fi flicks that take place in space that when someone of significant rank dies…they shoot them off into space. Now…if enough people die…you’ve got quite a few bodies floating out in space…does anyone else think that’s…weird? One day…they’ll have shot so many bodies in space that space will get cluttered with caskets. Think ahead people. Anyway, other than that, I really liked this movie. I don’t know why...but a lot of people hate this flick. I suppose it’s really cheesy and all…but I think it’s had a perfect balance. It was a good story. It’s got plenty of action and adventure and a fair amount of boobies and some man ass for good measure. And finally!!! For once…my favorite character (who was Ace Levy (Jake Busey)) didn’t die! I love Jake Busey…he’s cute and cool in an asshole kinda way. Hehe. Anyway. If you like sci-fi stories with a decent amount of gore and the plot where the underdog comes out on top…check this out. Even if you’re not a huge fan of sci-fi…give it a chance. I think people are harder on this movie than they should be. It’s awesome. Because of this, the jury gives this flick:
(This Movie Rocks!)
