Usual Suspects, The
[DVD Info]

Present day in San Pedro, California. The fire department is putting out a boat fire. Twenty-seven dead. Only two people survived…a badly burned Romanian and a man with cerebral palsy named Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey). A U.S. customs agent, Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) flies in from New York to get information on the murders on the boat and the missing 91 million dollars worth of cocaine. Although all his statements were suppressed and he was granted immunity, Dave makes Verbal tell his story focusing mostly on Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne) a notorious con man and killer. Verbal begins his story starting six months ago. A semi full of guns was hijacked and 5 well known criminals were brought in as suspects. Dean Keaton, Verbal Kint, Michael McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Fred Fenster (Benicio Del Torro), and Todd Hockney (Kevin Pollak). The police department doesn’t have anything on them but continues to question and threaten them. While together in a holding cell the five men plan a little sting operation just to get back at the feds. A fuck you from the five of them to the NYPD. Their plans come together perfectly but when they’re in L.A. (where they’re laying low for a while), they take another job from McManus’ confidant, Redfoot (Peter Greene). The job goes a little haywire and the goods turn out to be not as they were described. They find out the botched job was dictated by a lawyer named Kobayashi (Pete Postlethwaite) who works for the legendary Kaiser Soze. But Soze is nothing but a myth told by thieves to make sure their kids wouldn’t rat on them right? If he does exist what could he possibly want with them??

"Really? I live in Queens, did you put that together yourself, Einstein? Got a team of monkeys working around the clock on this?" ~Hockney.

I dunno about Stephen Baldwin... ^^;

First of all…to truly enjoy this movie you have to make sure you don’t know how it’s going to end before you watch it. It looses about 20% of its charm that way. It’s still awesome but doesn’t really have the impact that you’d get otherwise. This flick is a truly awesome movie that you can watch over and over again. Once you know the ending…when you watch it again…every little move that characters make and the things they say take on a whole different meaning. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it…you’ll notice new things every time you watch it. Hands down, the best character in the movie is Benicio’s character Fenster. I love how you can’t really understand him. I’m glad they followed through with that characteristic. It was hilarious! This movie, of course, is where the catch phrase “Who is Kaiser Soze?” came from. I highly recommend this flick. Its got a surprise ending (and ACTUAL surprise ending), extremely likable characters (haha, it’s so funny to see the animosity between McManus and Hockney…since the actors in real life seem to have HUGE amounts of it on their own), it never gets old, and because Benicio and Spacey are amazing actors. Anyway, it’s a great movie that deservedly reached cult status. It really is a great movie. Go see it if you haven’t already! Because of this, the jury gives this flick:
