The Virgin Suicides

[DVD Info]
In Michigan, 1975, five sisters, Therese [17] (Leslie Hayman), Mary [16] (A.J. Cook), Bonnie [15] (Chelse Swain), Lux [14] (Kirstin Dunst), and Cecilia Lisbin [13] (Hanna R. Hall) live in a very strict household with their mother and father. They weren't allowed to date or go out after school. The movie opens with Cecilia attempting to commit suicide by slitting her wrists. She is saved and after a little time in the hospital, she's brought home. With the advice of the doctor her parents let up a little and the sisters throw a party. This is where the main 5 boys of this story begin to obsess about these girls keeping every little scrap of paper and picture of these girls. During the party Cecilia excuses herself and throws herself out the window onto a spiked fence. The girls come to school and act completely normal, yet everyone tip toes around them, accidentally bringing up the suicide in one way or another making them more depressed. After this, the story focuses mostly on Lux. The school playboy Trip (Josh Hartnett) falls in love with Lux but she tells him "fat chance." He convinces Lux (and her father) to go to the dance. The condition? He has to bring all the girls (the lucky guys who've been obsessing over them get to escort them) and they have to be home by curfew. After being nominated prom king and queen Lux and Trip run off. The other girls make it home by curfew but Lux doesn't come home till the next morning (after having sex with Trip on the football field and then waking up all alone [and never seeing him again]).
Everyone expected a crack drown but what happened was extreme. The girls were taken out of school and Lux was forced to destroy her records. They weren't allowed to leave the house except to get the mail. Lux begins to have sex with random people on the roof (with her obsessors watching). In the end the girls plan a mass suicide. They invite the five boys over, only for them to stumble upon their bodies and for them to question what really happened for the rest of their lives.
"Obviously Doctor, you've never been a 13 year old girl before." ~Cecilia
The news lady was a biiiiiiiznatch! When someone's daughter just dies you don't interview about them about it. Especially about if they TALKED about wanting to die before they did. Then, even if the parents slam the door in your face don't do the story anyway!!!
Kirstin Dunst. Why does she ALWAYS have to be slutty????? I really think "Crazy/Beautiful" ruined her for me. Ugh.
This was a pretty good movie. You really feel sorry for those poor girls but totally understand why they do it. You can blame the mother mostly but I blame Trip a lot...because if he hadn't used and abused her...she wouldn't have been late, etc. Anyway! This was a sad but sweet film. Because of this, the jury gives this flick:
