Colour:
Griffons come in 3 different allowable colours:
Red, Black, Black and Tan, in some countries a fourth colour "Belge" is registerable.
rough baby on left, smooth baby on right,
mostly, you can't tell if a baby will be rough or smooth until the puppies are about 4 weeks old, when they are born,
they all look the same coat wise.
Red coloured, rough coat             red coloured, smooth coat
red babies are mostly born with a red/black mix (called "Belge") but then gradually clear the darker hairs out and go red.
Even the adorable black masks many red rough  babies have, mostly disappear as the puppy reaches maturity.
The red smooth puppy with a black mask,
will keep his black mask well into his middle age, where sometimes a little grey 'frosting' may appear on his lips.  This is normal
and acceptable in the show ring.

Black and Tan with rough coat
Black and Tan with smooth coat
very occasionally, a chocolate and tan
coloured griffon may be born - and even more seldom, a blue and tan occurs -
but as these colours are not allowable in any country, these are not to be shown or bred from.
All griffons should have black pigment,
ie, their rims of their eyes, lips and nose pad, plus toenails and feet pads, ought to be black.
Chocolate griffons have chocolate pigment and a lighter eye colour - this too is unacceptable in the show ring.
Blue griffons have grey/blue pigment.

Both these 2 odd coloured dogs were born overseas - we have not seen these colours so far here.
"Belge" colour, rough coat.
The "Belge" is not separately registerable in Australia, but occasionally may appear in litters.
