Saren's Interview on The Who~>

1. I~ How did you start liking the Who?
S~ It started with a CD... it was a really GOOD CD. From there it kind of spread like a disease... a GOOD                disease!
I~ What CD was that?
S~ Tommy.
2. I~ When did you decide to buy their albums?
S~ Once I had about five of the albums, I found out there were so many more songs I didn't have. SO I decided to get the rest.
3. I~ What would have to be your favorite Who album?
S~ Uh... It's hard... Not "It's Hard" (laughs) um... I'd have to say the box set. It kind of gets you started with your basic songs. The close runner up would be Sell Out.
I~ Which box set do you mean?
S~ Maximum R&B, it's a nice start.
4. I~ What kind of music did you like before you discovered The Who?
S~ Hm.... kind of older modern rock songs; bands that actually mattered, well they kind of mattered in their time, but now they don't really matter.
I~ Can you give an example?
S~ Smashing Pumpkins
5. I~ Who is your favorite band member of The Who? When did you discover this? Why is that particular band member your favorite?
S~ Probably Pete. When I first saw a picture of them [The Who], he just kind of looked interesting. I think it was the nose... But when you get past the nose and listen to the music, he just kind of gets better.
6. I~ When did you decide to buy the individual member's of The Who solo albums?
S~ I don't remember what it started with... which one I got... I just got one and it interested me and for some reason it just continued.
7. I~ Does this feed your appreciation for The Who itself?
S~ On some level it does. It kind of seperated them, showing the integrity of each member. Like Pete being more artistic with his music than John. But even some solo songs are sung by The Who as well. 
8. I~ Would you say that The Who is the best band ever? Why or Why not?
S~ Well... I would, but that wouldn't be entire truthful because everyone likes something different. I might hate a band that everyone likes. But to me, yes. To the rest of the world, probably not, they might think they're [The Who] are bland and tend to like The Beatles or something. 
9. I~ We know The Beatles are said to be the best band, but do you believe that their music exceeds their talents? 
S~ Like how?
I~ In the sense that John Lennon might have been the best song writer, but he's guitar playing was horrid, or that Ringo Starr's drumming was good, but he wasn't the best. Stuff like that. 
S~ Well, [to me] their style of music was pretty simple, so to them, they must have been pretty good, but compared to other bands- yes.
10. I~ What was your initial reaction to the news of John Entwistle's death?
S~ Well this was awhile ago and my appriciation always deepends and now I can say? We lost a great bass guitarist. At the time it didn't strike me on a personal level but now it makes me VERY sad.
11. I~ What was your reaction when you found out what caused his death?
J~Saddened, I know drugs were a big thing back then, but their effects just never wore off.
12. I~ Do you think it was a mistake for The Who to continue on with the North American Tour after John's death?
J~ Hell NO! When Keith died, they didn't stop! They didn't replace him either... you just can't replace guys like those.
13. I~ Back to The Who albums, what album do you believe is the most successful and interesting and why?
S~ Uh... Most successful and interesting? For me, probably Live At Leeds. It shows their maximum potential and who they really are. Also has their best songs up to that point.
14. I~ And what about the least successful?
S~ Uh... some of the smaller ones. Like singles like Magic Bus and Two's Missing. 
15. I~ Do you think Pete's addiction had any effect on his music?
S~ Well, it had an effect on him and in turn- his music too... It changed the way he preformed. The albums he made during his  addictions where still good. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I'm glad he was addicted!
16. I~ Do you think that The Who's music would have less charm and appeal is Roger Daltrey hadn't contributed his vocals to the band?
S~ On some songs, yeah. There are times I find myself wondering what it would sound like is Pete or John sang, but Roger does add that charm.
17. I~ Do you think that The Who's diverse personalities were staged or do you think it comes naturally?
S~ I think it comes naturally. They'd be tackey if they were all the same. It wouldn't be right... it wouldn't be natural.
18. I~ When Keith Moon died, do you think they could have selected a better replacement.
S~ Uh... you mean Kenney Jones- Kenney was all right and good, but he couldn't fit inside that Keith-sized spot. They need John to come in and fill the spot... John can fill any space.
19. I~ People tend to say that "Tommy" is (if not one of) the best Who albums recorded. Do you agree?
S~ Most defenately! It has something that the other's just don't.
I~ And what would that be?
S~ Has a classic tale- the way it was told through the music. "Quad" also has a different sound to it. I feel "Tommy" is more angery and of course with Pete's "Lifehouse", "Tommy is actually finished.
20. I~ Fans tend to forget about the albums "Face Dances" and "It's Hard" because Keith Moon isn't on them, do you feel that same way towards the two post-Keith albums?
S~ They're equally as good as the other ones. The difference is that Keith's face isn't on the covers, nor is he recorded on the albums. Kenney might not be as good as Keith or [later] Zak Starkey, but the album shouldn't suffer.They only suffers from the from the bad rap they get from [some] Who fans.
21. I~ Ever artist has a song that everyone seems to live, but you don't see what's so great about it. What song would that be for you in reguards to The Who?
S~ I would have to say "I Can See For Miles". It just doesn't interest me- I don't hate it! I just don't like it as much as I could.
22. I~ Pete Townshend has tried his hand at being an author, do you think this was a wise choice and if so, what about his stories make you like them?
S~ Well, he doesn't have to try hard to become an author. He already is. He wrote so many rock operas and songs that tell stories. As far as written work goes, he tries to go in a different direction, but they are intreging. They just lack the whole audio thing.
23. I~ Do you believe that John Entwistle's dark demeter and morbid personality goes beyond putting up a front and went into deeper meaning?
S~ Well, I'm sure his childhood and life effects his stage presence, but when you have a million people looking st you, expecting you to play something, that had a great effect too. I don't think the John on stage was the same John as the one off stage.
24. I~ What about The Who's live shows makes them so appealing?
S~ The way the songs were preformed and the songs themselves. It's mostly in the staging and how they deliver the music... they COULD go up there with a couple of guitars and just sit...
25. I~ Do you think The Who should continue to record and tour?
S~ Well, they've come this far with just Pete and Roger. I would love to see them put out another album. But with Pete's hearing, I don't want him to do something he can't. It's up to Pete and I say that with a heavey heart.
