Meet the Teacher

My name is Vicki Hassell.  I have been  married to my college sweetheart for 30 years and now have 3 grown children and one active grandchild, James.  I started my teaching career  in 1977
and I still love teaching.  I am doing what I want to do in life.  Five years ago,  my husband and I fulfilled a dream we had of living in the West, near the Rocky Mountains.

"LIFE IS NOT A JOURNEY TO THE GRAVE WITH THE INTENTION OF ARRIVING SAFELY IN A PRETTY AND WELL PRESERVED BODY, BUT RATHER TO SKID IN SIDE-WAYS,
THOROUGHLY USED UP, TOTALLY WORN OUT, AND LOUDLY PROCLAIMING:

WOW.... WHAT A  RIDE !!!

Past and Present Colleagues/Students

I began teaching in 1977  and have taught in five states (Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Colorado and Wyoming ), in over 10 schools.  I  have lost touch with many  whose friendships I value.   I would appreciate hearing from any of my past students or colleagues. You may remember me as Major Hassell, the teacher who taught at Georgia Military College.

Education

I graduated from Logansport High School in Logansport, Louisiana in  1974, attended Panola College for one year and graduated with a B.S. in Science Education from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana in 1977.

I have continued working towards a Master's Degree at Louisiana Tech, Georgia College, and Southeastern State University in Hammond, Louisiana. I received a Master's Degree in Educational Technology in 2005 through Walden University.

Continuing Education Background
Some courses led me to visit other schools and work in several different jobs to understand what is expected of students after graduation.  Others enabled me to meet the different learning styles and needs of my students.

I have taken classes or been involved in  the following:

  • Tech Prep
  • High Schools That Work
  • School to Work
  • Literacy Study Group
  • Spanish class for teachers.
  • ELL
  • Step up to Writing
  • Teaching special needs children
Experience/Certification

I am a certified high school science teacher with 25 years of experience. Over the years, we have moved several times due to restructuring in my husband's company. Because of these transfers,  I am certified to teach biology, chemistry, physics, general science and environmental science in Louisiana, secondary science in Colorado and biology, chemistry and physics in Wyoming. While the certification is not current, I have also been certified and taught science in Georgia and Mississippi.

Teaching Goals

As a teacher, I want students to learn how to analyze and interpret concepts in order to become better prepared for life's challenges after high school. I prefer non-traditional teaching methods using current technology because they address several different learning styles and teaching strategies.

My Classroom and Its Possibilities

I enjoy challenging students and seeing them learn and achieve. When planning or outlining material to be covered, I use the content standards for the class, the approved textbook and a course outline.  I also include current event resources based on the subject. I prefer having an overall teaching plan to start the year to ensure that the core concepts are covered.

As a teacher, I want students to learn how to analyze and interpret concepts, becoming better prepared for life's challenges after high school. My teaching goal is to reach all students. Information is disseminated using Power Point to address different learning styles in the presentation of the material.  Various internet sites are used for research, simulations and interactive lessons as well as project-based lessons.

A teacher connects to students by talking to them, not at them.  If I have a student who is doing poorly in my class, I talk to them as well as other teachers who have been able to reach them,  to determine methods have been effective in the past.  I also contact parents regarding student progress, and when problems interfere with learning.
