11/11/04 Where does the time go?? I am now in the graduate portion of my program, and will be finally receiving both of my degrees in August 2005!

Grad school is really quite different than undergrad. I don't know how to explain it, you'd just have to know. It's definitely been a perspective shift. I am working as a grader for two professors, one being the department chair. It's a very flexible schedule and pays pretty decently. I'm definitely enjoying it.

I have my first apartment now! Rayanne and I moved into our two-story, two-bedroom apartment in August. We love it! Sometimes I wonder why I ever stayed in the dorms as long as I did. But if I could go back, I wouldn't change anything. Besides, if I hadn't stayed in the dorms last year, I would have missed out on the great Clark Hall Smoke Out.

It has been a rough semester emotionally. There is a lot that is different this year between living off campus and so many of my friends and acquaintances have graduated, moved away, and/or gotten married. I was in Aimee's wedding last April, and will be in Melody's this coming May. One friend who moved away this summer called the other night, and he mentioned that it seems that all of his friends are still here in Denton. I replied that it seems that all of my friends are gone. I myself will only be here a few more months. But all of the changes have been really hard.

The craziest thing has just happened. Our administration just up and rescheduled half of finals week! And they moved it up! Our football team is one win away from playing in the New Orleans Bowl (the one nobody's ever heard of or cares about) for the fourth straight year. Well, the bowl game is on the Tuesday of what WAS finals week. So to accommodate the estimated 3,500 students who would either go to play, cheer, march, or watch, the entire 31,000-student body gets to take some of its finals early. This means I get an extra week of Christmas break, but I lose a weekend of studying. Also, since my classes only meet once a week, two of my classes are being gipped out of a week's worth of class material. And in one of those classes, that week's topic was the one I have been looking forward to all semester -- the entire reason I took the course!!

I have an editorial cartoon on my wall that I cut from the school newspaper a few years ago. In it a student is saying, "So tell me how my school's athletic status affects my academic future?" and the coach is thinking, "He must not be from Texas". I would love for our administration to demonstrate its commitment to academic excellence by turning down the invitation to the bowl game. Not that it's going to happen...

8/20/03 So it's about time I updated this page. I have just had the most incredible summer. I spent three weeks in Mexico in May. You can read about that here.

I came home just in time to see my sister graduate as valedictorian from Whitehouse High School. She's leaving for Belhaven College on Friday. You go, Alli!

The biggest part of my summer was my internship. I wasn't even looking for one, but the job just fell in my lap anyway. I worked at a well-respected CPA firm in Tyler and totally enjoyed it. They made me feel very welcome, and I learned so much. In some ways it was hard to leave to come back to school. I am going to miss working there, but hope to go back next summer.

I took an online marketing class. It was good to get it out of the way, but I don't think this online thing is a good way to learn.

I also saw two friends from UNT get married. I ended up taking four-day weekends for both, and got to see lots of my other friends in the meantime.

BIG news: I tried out for Jeopardy's college tournament on August 9th in New Orleans! I passed the written test, and will find out by the end of the month if I made it on the show.

My parents and I got everything moved into my dorm room in four hours the other day. I have no idea how it happened so quickly! Rayanne is supposed to be moving in this afternoon, so I'm just waiting for her to show up.

In Memory of Robert E. Rettberg
November 5, 1921 - April 27, 2003

My Grandpa went to be with Jesus a week ago. He lived a life full of faith and service. His 53-year+ marriage to my grandma was a beautiful life partnership that most people can only hope for. In the words of one of his favorite hymns, our Precious Lord took his hand and led him home.

Getting to Illinois for the funeral was another story. I had to endure several flight delays and one cancellation. I almost got stranded overnight at Chicago's O'Hare Airport last Wednesday. Thankfully, some strangers offered me a ride downstate, about 3/4 of the way, where my dad picked me up. We got back to the hotel in Springfield at quarter to 5:00 a.m Thursday. The wake-up call came at 7:00 a.m. After the funeral, we all had lunch at the restaurant which is in the building that used to be Grandpa's dad's blacksmith shop. Then it was back to the airport for my dad and sisters and I. After more delays, I got back to my dorm around 11:30 Thursday night. In all, I was gone less than 36 hours. I have done a lot of sleeping since! It was a tough trip, physically and emotionally, but there's no way I would have missed it. Now I have to take finals and prepare for Mexico.

4/20/03 Happy Easter! The message of Easter is the most important one you'll ever hear. Jesus is different from all other religious figures in that He is Alive! Hallelujah!

I went home for Easter, and my friend Rayanne came with me. We had a great time with my family and enjoyed the musical at Sylvania. I am so blessed to have a loving family and special friends.

4/15/03 Tonight I went to Lab Band Madness. UNT is world-famous for jazz, and all nine lab bands played tonight. Yes, nine. The concert lasted over four hours. That truly is madness!!

4/6/03 I am going to be a bridesmaid this summer! My friend Cheryl's wedding is June 12. Our friend Kate was going to be the bridesmaid, but her sister is getting married the next day. So Kate backed out, and Cheryl asked me. It's quite exciting!

4/3/03 What a week! I have had four tests since Monday. It was like finals but worse. At least during finals I don't have other classes, meetings, and activities to go to. I think I did quite well on all of them. I even won the candy bar in accounting because I missed the least multiple choice questions!

I think I finally know what I will be doing this summer. After Maymester in Mexico (my passport came today!), I will just go home to Whitehouse for the rest of the time. I am signed up for a marketing class online from UNT. It'd require two on-campus meetings, but I can make the round trip in a day if I have to. And if not, there are people here that I could stay with. I think it will work out just fine.

I also found out this week that the accounting department no longer offers the master's degree concentration that I want. They apparently cancelled it last year. I really want to work with government or non-profit entities, but will have to concentrate in something else for my degree and hope for an internship and other outside experience in what I want to do.

3/30/03 What an evening to have been in the house of God! Since this was the fifth Sunday of the month, tonight was open mic night at Memorial Baptist (my Denton church). We had special guests, the choir from Pleasant Grove Baptist (a black church). They were incredible; it was so great to praise God together with them. I played a violin solo, and Aimee sang. There were several other vocalists, instrumentalists, and ensembles. We sang an awesome group of hymns as a congregation: Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (which I requested), Crown Him With Many Crowns (which I also requested), He Lives, and the Trees of the Field song (fun clapping song). We ended the service with prayer with the entire group holding hands around the sanctuary. The service was almost two hours long, but hardly seemed like it. It was a very special night for our church family. All I can say is: PRAISE BE TO GOD! AMEN AND AMEN AND AMEN!!

3/29/03 Let's talk about astronomy, shall we? When the class first started, it was really cool. The subject matter is very interesting, and gives me a much greater appreciation for the way God created the universe.

The lab was very cool when it first started. The computer lab TA was awesome, the planetarium technology was amazing, and it was amazing to look through the telescopes at the observatory. Unfortunately, some of these labs have now gotten very tedious and long. Like today. I had a planetarium lab at 4:00 this afternoon. Labs are scheduled to be 3 hours long, but usually don't take the whole time. I worked ahead and finished the lab exercise before 6:00. They decided to take a 5-minute break. I went to see if I could leave early since I was done. They said half of my points come from being here and I'd lose them if I left. So I sat there, bored, for another whole painstaking hour, while the other people figured out where the "multiply" button is on their calculator. By the time I got to leave at 7:00, the cafeteria had already closed. So I had to go pay for food when I shouldn't have had to.

Now, the actual class. At 9:30 a.m., many of us in the class have trouble staying awake and/or concentrating. Plus we have to do a 10-page report on a space exploration mission. It has just been announced that the paper cannot be double-spaced. We are trying to negotiate that, or at least get the number of pages cut down. (Update 4/3/03: The paper can now be double-spaced.) I will be glad when this class is over!

Another thing is we always discuss the origins of the celestial bodies. Some of those theories are downright ridiculous! It makes much more sense to believe in a Creator who formed the heavens with all of their complexity and variety and splendor to bring glory to himself.

  • "The heavens declare the glory of God" Psalm 19:1
  • "Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name." Isaiah 40:26

3/24/03 Six Flags was so awesome! It was a gorgeous day. And since Melody is legally blind, we got special "cut" privileges. :-) Lifehouse totally rocked! The rest of spring break I was lazy at home. I sure needed to catch up on some sleep! Now it's back to the grind. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do this summer: if I'll have my job at UT-Tyler back (silly state budget), if I'll be able to take the classes I need there or have to come back to Denton. It's quite the complicated situation.

3/14/03 It is spring break!! I am going to Six Flags Over Texas tomorrow with several friends! It will be so great to go when it is not unbearably hot. Also, Lifehouse is going to be in concert there tomorrow night! Then I'm heading home for a relaxing (I hope) week there. Too bad everyone else had this past week off.

3/5/03 This has been a great week so far, although I have been dead tired. What I am most excited about is signing up for my Maymester study abroad trip. After my Summer II trip to Europe was cancelled, I looked into going to Mexico for Maymester to study business and Spanish (since I'm an accounting major and Spanish minor, it works out well). I have to come back a day early so I can be at my sister's high school graduation the morning of May 31st, but that shouldn't be a problem.

2/25/03 There was quite the winter storm that hit the DFW area yesterday. There have been reports of up to five inches of ice with a little bit of snow. UNT closed at 1:30 yesterday afternoon, remained closed today, and has already cancelled classes for tomorrow. These "snow" days are just what I needed after a thought-provoking but tiring statewide InterVarsity retreat this past weekend.

My friend Melody turned 21 yesterday. Nine of us braved the storm (and many restaurant closings) to take her out to dinner. We ended up at Chili's for two hours, and had a blast! It was certainly a memorable occasion.

My best friend Katie is 21 today. She still lives in Wisconsin, but we've remained very close over the last seven years since we lived near each other.

I really do miss Wisconsin weather a lot, but I'm kind of glad that I am not in college up there. Walking all around campus in the cold would not be too fun. And having to de-ice my car all the time would be a pain. Still, I would trade Wisconsin's summers and white Christmases for Texas' summers and leaf-raking Christmases any day.
