A Brief History
The Town of Victoria, incorporated in 1971 is situated about 105 km from St. John's with a population of approximately 1900. Nestled in a small river valley this picturesque inland town was first settled as a "winterhouse" for the people of Freshwater and Carbonear.

The majority of Victoria's early settles were most likely fishermen and their families. It is speculated that these fishermen, requiring wood to build boats, houses, stages and flakes settled in Victoria for its rich concentration of woodland. There is evidence of small scale supplement farming in the area. However Victoria residents, like most Newfoundlanders quickly realized that they could achieve a higher standard of living by concentrating their labour upon fishing.  more...
