Blessing and Cursing While we are not under the condemnation of God or the curse of the law for our sin, if we believe in Christ's sacrifice for it, there can still be things that need to be broken off from our lives in order for us to be totally free. There is lots in the bible about blessings and cursings. A curse can be from the past, something you have inherited through the generations, or what someone has said to you or what you have said to yourself. James
1:26 If any
man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but
deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Curses down from the generations - up to the 4th - still can affect us and if we know of anything that our ancestors did that was ungodly we need to repent, not because we are guilty but to break its power over us. Things we have said about ourselves, such as "I am so dumb" "I'm stupid" "I hate my body" or whatever. We need to thank God how he has made us not critize His workmanship as we are cursing ourselves and giving an opportunity for Satan. Things we have said negatively about other people, we have sowed a curse about some one else and we will reap a harvest in our own lives. Things people say about us such as "she's so stuck up" if there is truth in the statement and you are prideful then the words could stick. If you ask Him the Holy Spirit will show you where you may have to repent but don't worry otherwise. Some
signs of curses
are (but not always, that is why we need to seek Gods wisdom and not
label ourselves or others as being under a curse) The presence of only one or two of these problems would not necessarily be sufficient to establish conclusively the working of a curse but when several are present and recurs repeatedly the probability increases. It is only the Holy Spirit who can provide accurate diagnosis. To sum up it seems to me that as Jeremiah 17:9 says "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" As we grow closer to God He shows us our wickedness in comparison to his goodness. Not to make us feel bad but to bring us to deeper repentence and freedom. I think of the Christian walk like the peeling of an onion, each layer represents getting closer to the heart with lots of tears. Hopefully by the time all the layers are removed the heart will be pure.
