The state of Minnesota is generally made up of flatlands with some rolling hills - Eagle Mountain is its highest peak, topping off at 2,301 feet. The distinguishing feature of the state is the tremendous amount of lakes within the state - 15,291. Minnesota's lakes were cut during the Ice Ages along with the Great Lakes. In fact, Lake Superior forms a small north eastern border. Did you know that the mighty Mississippi river begins its journey to the Gulf Of Mexico in Minnesota? Yep, Lake Itasca serves as its mouth! SIZE: 86,943 square miles POPULATION: 4,919,479 (200 census) SHORELINE: 90,000 miles of shoreline - more than California, Florida, and Hawaii COMBINED!!! |

Minnesota's climate is Humid Continental, midlatitudinal, characterized by mild/hot and humid summers and very cold winters. In the summer the average temperatures range in the 70s and 80s F, but in the winter the temperatures are known to easily reach -20F and COLDER (However, the average temps in the winter is between 0 - 10 degrees F. The picture to the left shows the areas of high quality farmland in RED that is threatened by HIGH development. High quality farmland in GREEN has LOW encroaching development. |

The Boundry Waters of Minnesota are an exciting place to visit. The favorite thing to do (besides fishing) is to PORTAGE. Portaging is taking your canoe out of teh water and then walking it across dry land between ajoining bodies of water - sometimes only a few feet of land in between! Auntie Em was from Kansas, but Minnesota gets its fair share of Tornadoes (See Right) - the very south-western corner of Minnesota is in"Tornado Alley."
