Voyces a cappella is a seventeen-voice auditioned mixed vocal ensemble
founded in the spring of 1996 and based in Waco, Texas. Founder and
director is Suzie Wright. Devoted to the performance of music
composed or arranged for unaccompanied mixed voices, the ensemble
sang its premier concert on Mother's Day, 1996, with a concert of
English folk songs and American spirituals. Audience members
commented on the "purity of sound" and the "seamless blend." From
that concert came an invitation to sing on the pops concert of the
Waco Symphony Orchestra in September where the audience responded
enthusiastically with a standing ovation. Other concerts for this
season include an Advent concert called "Illuminations," "Songs
from the Heart"" (jazz arrangements of popular love songs), and
"Music for Holy Week."
All members of Voyces a cappella have extensive musical training,
but many have occupations outside the field of music including
teachers, librarians, graphic artists, an accountant, a computer
business owner, university professors (language, geology, music
theory), and university students.
