WCRP in Asia
ACRP Philippines
In the Philippines, ACRP had an active year in 1996. Ms. Lourdes
Mastura continued to serve as the Chapter President and Fr. Leonardo N.
Mercado, SVD as the Chairperson and CEO. The chapter has five
commissions which cover reconciliation and interreligious dialogue,
women, peace education and research, development, and the environment.
Some of their activities in 1996 include:
-
Participation in a multireligious lakaran, (Tagalog for "pilgrimage") to
celebrate the centennial of the Phillippine Revolution of 1896. From
August 31 to December 15, 1996, the pilgrimage was made in six parts.
At each leg of the journey, a different religious group hosted an event
focusing on their respective religions (Buddhism, Christianity,
traditional indigenous religions, Hinduism, Islam, and cults founded in
the Philippines).
-
Development of a women’s "peace constituency", a regional network of
women committed to peace and conflict transformation. The ACRP women’s
wing organized pilot consultations with various women’s groups,
governmental organizations and non-governmental organizations in four
provinces: Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi. The series
of consultations culminated in a final conference December 5-7, 1996 in
Cotabato City. Only 200 women were expected, but the event attracted
350. Conference participants discussed issues such as women in Islam,
women in development, and economic empowerment.
