National Convocation in Sierra Leone

As a follow-up to the January 1997 staff delegation from WCRP/International, the newly forming Inter-Faith Task Force of Sierra Leone is jointly sponsoring with WCRP a national convocation of religious and governmental leaders with representation from donor agencies. The theme of the convocation is The Role of Multireligious Collaboration in the Social Reconstruction of Sierra Leone, and the event will take place in Freetown on April 1, 1997.

Included in the list of three hundred invited participants are senior national and local leadership from the Council of Churches of Sierra Leone, the Muslim community, and the Roman Catholic Church; the Moderator of WCRP, Dr. N’Dam N’Joya, accompanied by the three other WCRP Presidents from Africa, Mrs. Olive Luena, Archbishop John Onaiyekan, and Dr. Tarlok Nandhra; the Head of State, President Kabbah; a number of government ministers and officials; and a number of religious representatives from the region and from neighbouring countries, such as Liberia. The convocation will result in a common statement of commitment by the religious communities to multireligious collaboration in the rebuilding of healthy civil society in Sierra Leone. A plan of action for join concrete initiatives will also be publicly endorsed.

April 1, 1997 has been set for the convocation, which would begin in the capital of Freetown and continue in the three provincial centers of Bo, Kenema and Makeni. The hope of the religious communities is that this event will initiate a formal structure for systematic multireligious activity in close cooperation with WCRP that would find ready acceptance on a national scale.
