UNESCO Activities
WCRP and UNESCO
On October 28, 1996, at its 150th session, the Committee on International
Non-Governmental Organisations of UNESCO’s Executive Board examined WCRP’s
application for reclassification of its formal relations with UNESCO.
The committee recommended to the Director-General, Dr. Federico Mayor,
that WCRP be admitted to full consultative relations with the organisation,
the highest category of formal status accorded an NGO under the new
directives concerning UNESCO’s relations with non-governmental organisations.
The recommendation of the committee concerning WCRP’s consultative status
culminates a year-long process, in which WCRP applied for a reclassification
of its relations with UNESCO. Mme. Jacqueline Roug¢‘, WCRP Representative
to UNESCO, took responsibility for directing WCRP’s application through
a complex set of requirements and procedures to demonstrate WCRP’s eligibility
for the distinction of being granted full formal consultative relations.
Chiara Lubich Named 1996 Recipient of UNESCO Prize for Peace Education.
Ms. Chiara Lubich, Founder and President of the Focolare Movement, and
an Honorary President of WCRP/International, was named as the 1996 recipient
of the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education. WCRP received news from the Director
General of UNESCO, Dr. Federico Mayor, on 1 August 1996 that WCRP’s nomination
of Ms. Chiara Lubich had been voted upon favourably by an international jury
from among 29 other proposed candidates.
Chiara Lubich founded the Focolare Movement in Italy in 1943. It now has
some 100,000 members in 180 countries. Focolare are small communities of
lay volunteers who seek to promote peace and social progress by bridging
the differences between religions, generations, social classes and individuals.
Ms. Chiara Lubich addressed the WCRP Sixth World Assembly in November
1994 at Riva del Garda, Italy, at which time she was elected as an Honorary
President for WCRP/International. It was also the volunteer work of hundreds
of Focolare members before, during and after the Sixth World Assembly that
helped to make that event so successful for WCRP.
