Banhu

The Banhu came into existence in about 1644, with the rising popularity of Banzi Opera. Its bright and sonorous timbre is warm and unrestrained. Thus is became the lead instrument for the vehenet and resounding Shanxi Opera. The Banhu is rather like the Erhu, except that the soundbow is made entirely of wood, without snake skin, as most members of the Huqin family has.
