Dizi
The most popular
Chinese wind instrument is probably the 2000 years old Dizi, or
the side-blown flute. One of its holes is covered with a thin
membrane, which can be rice paper. It most probably first
appeared during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD220). The Dizi can be
classified into the Qudi or the Bandi. The former is mellow in
tone and is used to accompany the Kunqu Opera performed mainly in
South China. The latter is clear and crisp in tone, and is used
to accompany the Clapper Opera popular in North China. The Dizi
is a unique solo instrument and is used extensively in both
ensamble and orchestras.
Famous pieces for the
Dizi include A Journey to Suzhou.
