Lute
An instrument of
folk origin, the lute is usually plucked but sometimes bowed. It
is widespread throughout Europe, Asia and Africa in hundreds of
styles. Best-known in recitals of ancient music is the
round-backed ten-string lute. Bach is the latest composer to have
written substantially for it, but sone obscure and
inconsequential pieces appeared about 1800 and after.
