Wagner Tuba
A related instrument
to the tuba and horn is the Wagner Tuba, made for that composer
by the Parisian firm of Adolphe Sax for performances of The
Ring. Wagner intended to fiall a gap he perceived between
horns and trombones, though the gap is not of notes but of tones,
the new tubas being 'solemn, dignignified and heroic' rather than
having the lyrical quality Wagner detected in ordinary rubas.
Wagner tubas have a mouth piece like that of a horn, elliptical
bodies and small bells. Since Wagner, Richard Strauss and
Stravinsky are among those who have made use of the instrument.
