Xiao

About 70 cm long and made of bamboo, the Xiao has the blowing hole at the edge of the closed upper end, five holes on the front side and one hloe at the back to control the tone. It is held vertically, like a recorder. The Xiao was already usd in accompaniment, ensamble and solo during the Western Jin Dynasty (265 - 316 AD). Its timbre is soft, clear, sweet and mellow.

Famous pieces for the Xiao include Plum Blossom, composed during Eastern Jin Dynasty (317 - 420 AD).
