About the National Youth Choir of Great Britain

I'm part of the National Youth choir of Great Britain or NYCGB as it is widely known. We have about two hundred people on our lists ranging from 16 - 21/22. The choir is not a regular church choir and does not meet up regularly, instead prefering to meet twice a year for an extended period of time. This is because members come from all over Great Britain. Normally we number about 130 - 140 per course.

I've been singing with the choir for about 4/5 years now. I'm a male Alto, or Counter Tenor as we are otherwise known. Yes, you get the odd look , but generally I enjoy singing in a section full of women.

The Choir is conducted by Michael Brewer OBE and has been going since 1980. We go on a major tour every 2-3 years for about seven weeks at a time. One tour in 1996 went to Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, California, Mexico and the cook Islands. I've just been on tour again this year. Our list of destinations for 1999 was South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, America, Hawaii and the Cook Islands. I'm also in "Laudibus," formerly the National youth Chamber choir of Great Britain. I've just done a few courses with them, the most recent being a performance of Bachs' "St.John Passion."
By the way, several CD's are available, with music ranging from Routh, Rainier, Rawsthorne and Swain, to Wood and Pearsall. I think most are on Priory records or Hyperion.
