1999 in Review

1999 marked the 50th anniversary of the Band. St. Columcille UGPB has flourished through 50 years of continuos piping under the direction of the McGonigal Family. A gala celebration was held at the Gran Centurion, Clark NJ on April 10th, 1999. Over 400 hundred band members, family and supporters attended the dance.

1999 also saw the return of St. Columcille UGPB and Sean McGonigal Memorial PB to the 1999 World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow Scotland. Over 40 band members along with family members and friends attended the trip. The trip was a resounding success in bringing the band into world class pipe band competition in regards to recognition and performance.

The First Annual North Jersey Knockout Competition was organized by Tom Burnham & Liz McPadden. This was moslty an intra-band competition, although we will be opening it up to outside participants in the future. The premise of the competiton is to hold multi-knockout rounds where the competitors are paired off to compete against each other to "knock them out" of the round. Judging is provided by Guest Judges, which this year included Chris Hamilton from the City of Washington Pipe Band and Kenny MacLeod, maker of the famous McCallum Bagpipe. The final winner is declared when he/she is the last one left. This brought forth some stunning wins and losses. Overall, this was a huge success and will become o mainstay of st. Columcille activities.

Other notable hi-lights include a first place finish for the Gr. IV Sean McGonigal Memorial PB at Colonial Highland Gathering, Fair Hill, DE and the Gr. IV Columcille School of Piping & Drumming winning first place to become the North Eastern United States Champions at the Capital District games in Altamont, NY.
