Our first program of the fall season will take place on Wednesday, October 19th. Vice President Lewis Smoley will address the Society on "Das Lied von der Erde", Mahler's great symphonic song cycle. The lecture begins at 7:30 pm, in the New York Philharmonic Board Room at 132 West 65 th Street (enter through the stage door at the rear of Avery Fisher Hall and inform Security that you are attending the Mahler Society program on the Sixth Floor).
On Thursday, November 10th, members and guests are invited for a Social Evening of music, resfreshments, and camaraderie at 7:30 pm in Liederkranz Hall (6 East 87th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues). Join us for an informal presentation of "quotes" and "paraphrases", by other composers, from Mahler's music. Wine and hors d'oeuvres, coffee, tea and pastries will be served and door prizes will be awarded. Come and enjoy a stimulating evening of discussion, and meet your fellow members in a social setting. Admission is free for members and one guest; $5 at the door for additional guests and non-members.
We are working on the next issue of "Wunderhorn" and hope to have it in the mail by mid-September. If any members are interested in contributing to future issues, or have information concerning Mahler programs or events that would be of wide interest, please contact Paul Stumpf via mail or email (email@example.com).
Mahler Society Board member (and widow of co-founder Jack Diether) Doris Diether was recently honored with this year’s Historic Districts Council Lifetime Achievement Award. A Greenwich Village preservation advocate, zoning expert of citywide repute, and a Community Board 2 member since 1964, Doris was cited for her zealous efforts to get appropriate zoning in historic areas.
Congratulations, Doris, from all of us in the Mahler Society!
