Ceud Mile Failte

Welcome to the world of Scottish Dance. There is Scottish Country Dance, which is supported by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and there is Highland Dance which is supported by the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dance and by the Federation of United States Teachers and Adjudicators.
Many people are unfamiliar with any Scottish Dance (although quite a few seem to think it's Riverdance- which is actually Irish!) I hope to give a background of what makes Scottish Dance different, and to help other dancers find competition info or anything else they might be looking for.

A Wee Bit About Me

I am both a Scottish Country Dancer and a (still!) competing Highland Dancer. Competing Highland dancers are not that unusual, except that I began Highland dance when I was already way over the age when most Highland dancers have finished dancing.
In competition, there are usually adult divisions (there is a growing number of beginning adult dancers!) and I have done well. I began competing in July 1996 and I advanced to Novice in September 1997! I am proud of what I have accomplished and plan to continue on to Premier and eventually take my exams so I can teach!
In Country Dance, I will take my Pre-Exams this summer at the Scottish Country Dance Summer School in Waterloo, Ontario.
I am Highland Dance Chair for the Midwest City, OK Scottish Heritage Festival. Our competition is Saturday, March 21, 1998.
I am also constantly working on a project compiling as much history as I can find about Highland and Scottish Country dance. So many dancers know so little about what these dances represent, I want to share what I can. It makes such a big difference when you realize what it is these dances portray.
I hope you enjoy this page. Come back often, I find new stuff to add all the time and this is my playground so I am going to try all kinds of new stuff! By the way, the background is Napier. This is the tartan I dance in most of the time.
Yours aye,
Joanna
