I became a music teacher for two reasons. Firstly, I love music & I'm good on my chosen instruments (piano & flute). Secondly, I enjoy helping other people find their own path of expression through music.
It is not generally the most talented students who give me the greatest job satisfaction. It is those with little or no musical skill who first struggle then come to enjoy their new ability.
I enjoy all different types of music. When gaining my qualifications, I studied classical music. I now lecture at a local college, where the students have widely differing musical tastes and I have to keep up-to-date!
I am currently teaching a new Jazz Piano syllabus to some of my students. Although I enjoy classical music, it is good to see the people who control what is goes into the syllabus offering something different.
