Born 5 July 1895 to Stephen and Clara Jacob,

The seventh son and the last child in a family of ten

He was born with a cleft palate

His father died when Gordon was aged just three

At age 12 he cut the main tendon in his little finger making it difficult to use many instruments

He enlisted in the Field Artillery on August 26th 1914

His favourite brother Anstey died on 18th September 1916

He was taken POW in April 1917, one of 60 survivors out of a battalion of 800

In 1924 he married his first wife Sidney Gray

There were many letters between Gordon and Vaughan Williams from 1920 onwards

He was made a Friend of the Royal College of Music in 1946

Arranged the National Anthem for the Coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953

In 1966 he resigned from his position at the RCM

He was awarded the CBE in the New Years Honours List for 1968

In 1972 he became associated with the wind music publishers Emerson

In 1981 he was guest of honour at an International Conference of Symphonic Wind Bands

By the time Gordon Jacob died on the 8th of June 1984 aged 89 he had written over 700 pieces of music and several books.
