This initiative
creates an on-going set of FREE monthly concerts, for the Viera East
Golf Course District Association's communities, providing the
performance of both audio CD and
video DVD concerts of the world's greatest classical music. If demand
is
there, the frequency of performances will be increased to possibly
twice each month. I have reserved the Party Room at the
Residents Club beginning Tuesday, July 12, 2005 starting at 7:30 PM and
for each second Tuesday of each month.
So the second Tuesday of July, the
12th, at 7:30 PM
will be Opening Night of the Summer Concert Series.
With the advent
of both digital Compact Disks (CDs) and Digital Video Disks (DVDs),
it is possible now to recreate and enjoy the highest fidelity of both
audio
and video performances of music. Combining the large TV set in the open
room in the Residents Club, with a stero high fidelity audio system,
with dual speakers, it will be possible to recreate the highest
quality of music possible with today's technologies.
MY TWO BACKGROUNDS
As the Music Director for these
performances, let me share my backgrounds with you, so you will know
where I am coming from, in a musical sense. I have had two backgrounds.
The
first, and earlist, was in music, while the second, and
the one
which became my professional career, was engineering.
I was was born, raised and
educated in Miami, Florida. I graduated from high school in 1950
with
a music scholarship from the University of Miami, where I began to
pursue a career as a music conductor, playing violin in the U o M
symphony
and singing in the mixed chorus. With the outbreak of the Korean War,
one year later I enlisted in the US Navy in 1951, where I received
extensive
electronics training in radio, electronics, communications and sonar,
used the GI Bill, returned to college, this time at the University of
Florida, and obtained a degree in electrical engineering.
Growing up, I had an early
background in music (violin, voice, orchestra, band, chorus and
conducting) from late elementary school, through junior/senior high and
through college, in the Navy, church choir and sang in the Winter Park
Bach Festival Choir. That was the end to my early music career, when I
switched from music to electrical
engineering. During my working career, I was just appreciating good
music, but
not performing. Being retired now, and combining my electrical
engineering talents with my interest in classical music, I have built
up a large collection of CDs and now am building a DVD collection of
classical music digital videos. I have both constructed and assembled
high fidelity audio systems for playing high quality sounding music
over the years.
These two talents have led me to
consider proposing holding what I have coined:
VEGCDA
Communities Classical Video and Music Concerts
whereby music would be
played for listening enjoyment from CDs and DVDs, using the large TV in
the Residents Club and a high fidelity music system. These
could be held in the evenings possibly every week or two, depending on
interests, attendance, etc. If volunteers stepped forward, refreshments
might be able to be served. I plan to provide an Intermission for this.
I have now assembled in DVD media all
9 of the Beethoven Symphonies, the 4, 5, and 6th Symphonies of
Tschaikowsky, the Beethoven Violin Concerto, the Beethoven Emperor
Piano Concerto #5, the Dvorak New World Symphony #8 and will be adding
more to augment the broad collection of the most popular classical
music on CDs (without the video). Suggestions from other residents have
already indicated availability of the 3 Tenors and the new Phantom of
the Opera, as examples of what else can be included for
viewing/listening.
Do you feel this would be received
well in our community, and should I go forward to develop this further
into a more detailed proposal? Do you know of others who might wish to
join with me in planning and leading this effort for the community's
benefit and enjoyment? If so, please contact me and give me your input.

CONCEPT
OF OPERATIONS
I would like to
propose reserving the Residents Club's meeting room for one night each
month, say start with the second Tuesday. There would be a standing
announcement in the Resident Times on the Calendar to this effect. I
have created thisWEB page, hopefully with a link provided on the VEGC
WEB page. With this I plan to post the upcoming concert program,
program notes, etc.
The program would be structured just like a real concert, with an
opening Overture/Prelude, a minor work or two, an intermission/break
then a
major work, like a Symphony. Then an unannounced Encore would close.
Discussion would be given about the music to be performed, the
composers, the orchestras, conductors, soloists, etc. If there was
interest, and volunteers, coffee and refreshments could be served. A
Steering Committee would be encouraged to be formed, to guide this and
to plan the programs, with members of the Committee rotating leading
the program on different nights. An evening's program would last
about 1 1/2 hours, there abouts. We could start say at 7 PM and be out
by 8:30 or 9 PM. If there are music compositions you wish to suggest be
performed, just drop me a line by email, US mail or a phone call.
I have selected the music CDs and DVDs to be
performed at the first concert (date and time to be announced). I
feel you will find this a most stirring program, with performances of
some of the greatest of all the classical music (Wagner, Beethoven and
Tchaikovsky) by some of the world's finest orchestras (Vienna
Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic and the Wiener Philharmoniker).
Let me hear from you and urge your neighbors to give this consideration
and let me hear from them as well.
Walter L. Elden, P.E. (Ret), Music Director
