Vanness was born in Santa Monica of Los Angles in California. He has 2 older siblings which are Stacy and Wendy. After he entered his first year of school, his parents sought a divorce and ended their relationship. He returned to Taiwan to continue his primary school. His sake of love for his parents caused him to go back and forth between USA and Taiwan. He finally settled down in USA when he was in 2nd Grade. Then, his mother got remarried and gave birth to another of his 2 younger siblings.

When he was a child, he was very naughty. He liked games such as jumping into ditches, pretending to have family parties which many attended, catching frogs and the "police catch thieves" game... His childhood was full of mirth and laughter. He liked watching movies since he was really young. One day, when he saw a dancing part in the movie-"Break Into", his interest in dancing sparkled. He then met "L.A. BOYZ" in a summer camp and learned dancing from them. He became really good friends with Jeff who was 5 years older than he was. When he turned 18, he took part in the Run DMC's music video-"It's like That" with one of L.A. BOYZ's cousin. Because of the influence by one of his sisters and L.A BOYZ, he began to work hard to save money so that he could buy an airplane ticket to Taiwan to achieve his dream.

He arrived in Taiwan on Sep. 15th, 2002. At the beginning, his life was very arduous, all his meals were bought from 7-11, and where he slept was the sofa in his friend's house. He wanted to be a singer, so he sent his demo tape to many record companies, but no one replied. He was cute enough to ask the record company to give back his demo because he had no copy of it. He also went to the MTV Fresh VJ contest; however, he was not selected (Wu Zhong-tian was selected at that time). But Vanness did not give up his dream. Then he entered the Super Sunday ABC Beauty contest, Steven, a member of L.A. BOYZ's, went with him. Vanness's hair had been quite long at that time. He was in black, had bounded his hair together, looked very~~~~ COOL! GOD bless, Vanness finally succeeded. He was luckily picked by Chai Zhi-ping and took part in the drama Meteor Garden with Jerry Yan, Vic Chou and Ken Chu.

Because of this Drama, F4 became KNOWN Worldwide. But it's was not smooth at the beginning, Mimasaka, played by Vanness, did not take an important role, so there were a few people who had paid attention to him. And because his Mandarin wasn't spoken well enough, he met a lot of difficulties when taking the drama. Adding to more drama, his girlfriend in L.A. called him up and broke their rapport apart. Vanness was felt hopeless, he even had the idea to go back to L.A. but his mother asked him to stay in Taiwan, although she herself missed Vanness very much. Since then, Vanness became a pious Christian. With the help of God, Vanness conquered the psychological faults and difficulties, and still stayed in Taiwan. He regained his mind and decided to dedicate himself on his career.

Because of the success of Meteor Garden, F4's first album Meteor Rain was published, and the rate of it's buyers were very high. At the same time, they held their first concert in Taipei. Vanness shocked many people with his peculiar voice and extravagant moves. Many people changed their opinions about him! Then, Vanness took part in Peach Girl, in which he acted as "Gang an li". The improvement of his acting made him win more respect.

On August 13th, 2002, Vanness's first solo album Body Will Sing was published. All the songs in the album were written only for him. He showed his own attractiveness to everyone. Asia-Tour new songs show cases, signature meetings and many promotion activities he all participated personally. By this, under the non-stopped hard working, Vanness's dream had come true. At the same time, Colombia Pictures Company in Hollywood selected him to play the duty of younger Genghis Khan. Before this, he and F3 had cooperated with the Disney Company in USA, they sang the Chinese version Theme of Lilo & Stitch.

On November 7th, 2002, F4 started their World-Tour concert in Shanghai, F4 and Vanness were on the international stage. On September 18th, 2002, F4's second album Season of Firework was published. Vanness became more and more ripened.
