Rare Books

Here's a site for rare Asian books. Go to Paragon Books. If you're looking for that out of print book on Asian culture, literature or art this is the place to go. While you're there read all about how Paragon started.

Book Review

Here's a book we recommend:

China Style by Sharon Leece. The book is filled with brilliant pictures using Ming style furniture. Take special note of the rich deep color combinations that blend with the classical Ming style furniture. The reds, jade greens and mustard yellows are bold, reminiscent of Ming imperial robe colors. The examples of Ming style mixed with Western style from different eras and in different settings are provocative.

Another recommendation is:

Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture by Sarah Handler. This book delves deeper into the history of Chinese furniture and is quite exhaustive reading. Chinese classical furniture had its origins in the Song dynasty (960-1279) reaching great heights in the late Ming and early Qing dynasty. The hardwoods such as zitan were not native to China and were actually imported from Southeast Asia. A must read book for the connoiseur of Ming style furniture.

In My Opinion...

Had a call from a lady who asked about using a Chinese country style cabinet as a bathroom vanity in her new house. She said she thought cutting a hole for the sink was sacrilegious. I suggested that if it was not a museum piece I would do it. From a design aspect it is unique and goes against convention. Which brings to mind, anything old (read "antique") is not necessarily good art. I suggest we look at the aesthetic of a piece first and if it's antiquated fine. And from my experience there's a lot of bad old stuff as well as good new stuff in Asian decorative arts. So says Jeffrey Lim...In My Opinion!
