An Inconsequential Epic
Setting is kind of a 1920’s feel—clothing, technology  trends.
Maybe change Astarte to Lamash

Panel 1 Large panel looking down on the bed of a young girl, who is lying down in her bed in a nightgown and a ladies night hat.   She is Prudence, an eight year old girl.  Now she is staring straight up at us with her head resting on her pillow.  Her eyes are wide with fear and she is screaming.

PRUDENCE:                           WOLF!

Panel 2:  Prudence has sat up in her bed, pulling her covers close to her she is looking around and still screaming.  We can now see she is sleeping in a large room full of beds like hers lined up against a wall full of large windows.  About 12 total beds.  Each bed holding a girl about her age in the same kind of sleeping attire.  Some of the girls rising to see what's up.  The only light in the room comes from moonlight coming in through the windows.

PRUDENCE:                           WOLF!  WOLF!

Panel 3:  Headmistress Astarte enters the room via a large wooden door.  The door will be open wide enough that something or someone large could stand behind it.  And we won't be able to see if anything is behind the door--yet.  She is holding a small oil lantern-the kind with a small glass reservoir to hold the oil-with her for light, and it is the only light in the room.  She will carry this lantern with her through the whole scene.  Astarte is a skinny woman with a ghoulish appearance, hair in a bun, wearing a long but kind of tight fitting  black wool dress.  She looks angry, but it's her first nature, being a quite nasty person to begin with.

ASTARTE:                              WHAT IS ALL THIS NOISE!?

Panel 4:  Closing in on Astarte's face--a skinny but cracked and wrinkly landscape of hatred.  Emphasized with particular scorn while looking at Prudence.

ASTARTE:                              OH.  PRUDENCE.  I MIGHT HAVE KNOWN.  WHAT IS THE GRAND ADVENTURE THIS TIME?

Page  2

Panel 1:  Prudence, with a look of genuine worry is looking up at Astarte.

PRUDENCE:                           HEADMISTRESS ASTARTE!  A WOLF IS LOOSE IN THE BUILDING!

Panel 2:  Back to Astarte.  Eyebrow raised in sneery interest.

ASTARTE:                              A WOLF, IS IT NOW?

Panel 3:  Astarte is calling to one of the other girls in a bed next to Prudence's bed.  The girl is risen up to speak to Astarte.  She is Penelope, and though all the girls are in the same clothes, the faces should be fairly distinguishable.

ASTARTE:                              PENELOPE?  HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WOLF PRUDENCE SPEAKS OF?

PENELOPE:                            NO, HEADMISTRESS ASTARTE!

Panel 4:  Astarte calling to the girl on the other side of Prudence.  This girl, Astrid is also raising up to speak to Astarte.

ASTARTE:                              ASTRID?  IS THERE A WOLF?

ASTRID:                                  NO, HEADMISTRESS ASTARTE.

Panel 5:  Close on Astarte.  She is motioning as if to address the whole room.

ASTARTE:                              HAS ANYONE HERE SEEN A WOLF?

Panel 6:  A large panel looking at the whole room.  Astarte standing at the foot of Prudence's bed.  Prudence is looking at Astarte with pouty worry.  Astarte and all the other girls are looking at Prudence.

Panel 1:  Astarte is walking from the foot of Prudence's bed to get closer to the head of her bed.

ASTARTE:                              NO.  PRUDENCE, THERE IS NO WOLF.

Panel 2:  Astarte is closer to the head of the bed.

ASTARTE:                              THERE ARE NO ELVES IN THE FOREST, NO GHOSTS IN THE CLOUDS, NO FAIRIES IN THE CANDLE FLAMES…YOUR TALL TALES ARE BECOMING TIRESOME.

Panel 3:  Looking at Astarte and Prudence as Astarte is bending down to speak more personally to Prudence.

ASTARTE:                              YOU WILL CEASE YOUR RIDICULOUS NOTIONS AT ONCE, PRUDENCE, OR THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES, I ASSURE YOU.

Panel 4:  Closing in to see Prudence's ear and to see that Astarte has gotten her mouth close in to speak into Prudence's ear.

ASTARTE:                              IN FACT, I SUGGEST THAT YOU DISCONTINUE ALL SPEAKING OF ANYTHING FROM NOW ON, OR I WILL CRACK OPEN YOUR SKULL AND MAKE A PIE FROM YOUR BRAINS.

Panel 5:  Astarte is now walking away from the bed toward the door.  Not looking at Prudence as she walks.

ASTARTE:                              ARE WE CLEAR, PRUDENCE?

Panel 6:  Astarte now turning to look at Prudence.  Prudence looks a little scared.

Panel 7:  Astarte is standing at the door beginning to pull it shut behind her.

ASTARTE:                              VERY GOOD.  SWEET DREAMS, GIRLS.

Page 4

Panel 1:  Now that the door is closed, we see the space that before was obstructed by the open door.  Standing in this space is a great wolf.  He is black with some silver patterns.  He is easily four feet high at the shoulder.  He is looking toward our POV, which is about where Prudence is, with a menacing look.

Panel 2:  The wolf is approaching Prudence’s bed.  He is staring right at her face.  Prudence is covering her mouth in order not to call out.  Eyes wide in fear.  All of the other girls are asleep, or otherwise not paying attention.

Panel 3:  The wolf is now speaking to Prudence.  It is more than she can handle, and her hands are thrown down in order for her to push away from him.

WOLF:                                    GATHER YOUR VESTMENTS.  YOU WILL COME WITH ME.

Panel 4:  Prudence is pushing away to the head of the bed to get away from the wolf, screaming.  The wolf is looking back toward the door with some concern.

PRUDENCE:                           WOLF!  WOLF!

Panel 5:  The door is flying open.  Headmistress Astarte is standing there angrily.  She is holding the lantern in one hand, and a small hammer in the other hand.  This hammer is double headed and square, a small version of a  blacksmith’s hammer.

ASTARTE:                              I SUSPECTED YOU COULDN'T KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT EVEN IF IT MEANT YOUR LIFE--SO BE IT!

Page 5 Panel 1 takes up top row. Panels 2-4 are the second row. Panels 5 and 6 are the third row.

Panel 1: Headmistress Astarte is moving quickly toward Prudence’s bed.  Pulling the hammer back for an obviously fatal blow.

Panel 2: Looking at Astarte in the face.  A woman full of hatred, but something demonic also lies underneath the skin.

Panel 3:  A zoom on the hammer as it is flying through the air.

Panel 4: Looking at Prudence in the face.  Her fear of Astarte is worse than the fear for the wolf.  A sadder, more desperate fear.

Panel 5: The wolf has jumped on Prudence’s bed to halt Astarte’s advance.  Astarte is pulling back in terror.  The wolf is snarling as hs speaks to her.

WOLF:                                    STAND DOWN, WOMAN!!

Panel 6:  Smaller panel zooming on the wolf as he continues to scold Astarte.

WOLF:                                    NO HARM SHALL COME TO THIS CHILD--SHE IS NOW IN MY CHARGE!!

Page 6

Panel 1:  Astarte is stepping backwards away from the wolf.  The hammer falling from her hand.

Panel 2:  Astarte is turning to run away from the wolf.  She is gaining too much momentum, and it looks as if she will fall.

Panel 3:  Astarte is stumbliing.  The lantern in her other hand is flying into the air.

Panel 4:  The lantern flying in the air, making loops of fire as it flies toward the wall.

Panel 5:  The lantern is hitting the wall, exploding into a nice wall of fire near the door to the hall.

Panel 6:  Looking at Astarte as she rises up, looking at the fire with a look of surprised anger.

Panel 7:  Astarte is running out of the door to the hall now.  Next to the doorway is the fire, which is spreading wildly.  A spark is flying to the back of Astarte's dress starting a small flame.  She does not know.

Page 7

Panel 1:  The fire is starting to spread.  The wolf looks at Prudence nervously.  Some of the other girls are waking up, and running out the door to leave.  Prudence is looking at the wolf with worry.

WOLF:                                    WE MUST LEAVE NOW.

PRUDENCE:                           WAIT!  SOME OF THE OTHERS ARE STILL ASLEEP!

Panel 2:  Prudence is grabbing her daytime clothes under one arm.  The wolf is looking at her sternly.  More girls are running from the room.

WOLF:                                    THERE IS NO TIME.  LET'S GO NOW!

Panel 3:   Prudence is looking at the wolf angrily.  Pointing a finger at him to get her point across.

PRUDENCE:                           I MUST WAKE THEM BEFORE I GO.  I CAN'T LET THEM BURN UP!

Panel 4:  The wolf now a bit humbled is motioning her to go.

WOLF:                                    …VERY WELL.  BUT BE QUICK ABOUT IT!

Panel 5:  Prudence running down the row of beds waving her arms.  She still has her dayclothes  with her.  Maybe she's waving them.  The girls are waking and running toward the door to escape the now out of control blaze.

PRUDENCE:                           GIRLS!  WAKE UP, THERE IS A FIRE!

Page 8

Panel 1:  Prudence is joining the rest of the girls in leaving the room.  The wolf brings up the rear.

Panel 2:  Prudence, the girls and the wolf all running down a long hall way.  Flames are spreading around them.

Panel 3:  Prudence, the girls and the wolf running through a large greeting room just inside the front entrance of the boarding house.  Some furniture there, a recieving area with some couches in a circle.  The wolf possibly leaping over one of the couches for some action.  Flames are not quite to this area, but can be seen in the hallway where they just escaped.

Panel 4:  Prudence, the girls and the wolf are all running outside of the boarding house.  The house can now be seen as a two story fairly large plain square building.  The front porch is a large, almost victorian structure, with vines on trellis around it.  Flames are coming out of many of the windows now, including some on the second floor.  The house is surrounded by fields, and no other buildings are near.  A dirt road runs in front of the house.  All of this might not be seen, but it's there to use if necessary.

Panel 5:  Facing all of the girls from the building as they are standing together looking at the fire.  All wearing their night clothes and hats.  Prudence stands next to the wolf pointing up to where the second floor of the building would be.

Page 9

Panel 1:  Looking at the front of the building, flames now pouring out of every window.  One of the windows on the top floor has a sihlouette of Astarte.  Her arms flailing

Panel 2:  Closing in on the window where Astarte is burning.  We can make out some features now.  She is holding her arms out and grimacing in pain.

Panel 3:  Closing in more on the window to see Astarte burning.  Her clothes and hair are burnned away, but her body is mostly obscured by the flames.  Her mouth open ready to scream.

Panel 4:  As before, Astarte is starting to show signs of not being altogether human.  Her face is beginning to take the form of a demon woman.  Body contorting into something otherworldly

Panel 5:  Flames consuming the body of Astarte wildly.  What can be seen of her is now very surely not human.  Her mouth still open to scream.

Panel 6:  Where the body was, only a pillar of smoke  curling wickedly, perhaps with a demonic face contorted into a scowl issues from the window.

Page 10:

Panel 1:  Back to the same scene of all of the girls  looking up to the second story.  All of the other girls are looking on in almost shock.  Prudence is looking at the wolf calmly.  The wolf turning to leave.

PRUDENCE:                           AH, SO SHE WAS A DEMON.

WOLF:                                    SO MANY OF THEM ARE.  WE SHOULD BE LEAVING.

Panel 2:  Prudence follows the Wolf without hesitation.  The other girls watch  emotionlessly as they leave.

PRUDENCE:                           WHERE ARE WE GOING?

WOLF:                                    ON AN ADVENTURE, PRUDENCE.  WOULD YOU FANCY AN ADVENTURE?

Panel 3:  Looking from behind as Prudence and the Wolf begin to walk down the dirt road into the darkness.  Prudence is dancing with excitement.

PRUDENCE:                           I WOULD!  I VERY MUCH WOULD!  ARE YOU A GOOD WOLF?

WOLF:

Panel 4:  Looking from behind as Prudence and the Wolf are walking further away from us.  Both are talking.

WOLF:                                    I AM A WOLF, AND I AM HERE TO PROTECT YOU.

PRUDENCE:                           CAN WE GO TO ROME?  I HEAR IT IS LOVELY THERE!

Panel 5: Looking from behind as Prudence and the Wolf are walking further away from us.  Prudence looking at him with excitement.

WOLF:                                    IF YOU WANT TO GO TO ROME, WE SHALL GO.

PRUDENCE:                           OHHH.  YOU ARE A GOOD WOLF, MR. WOLF.  IS THAT YOUR NAME?

Panel 6: Looking from behind as Prudence and the Wolf are walking further away from us.  They are almost completely obscured by the darkness.  Both are talking.

WOLF:                                    YOU MAY CALL ME FENRIS.

PRUDENCE:                           WHAT A SHARP NAME THAT IS!  TO ROME, MR. FENRIS!

PAGE 11

Panel 1:  Back to the rest of the girls who are staying together, some still watching the fire, some watching where Prudence and the wolf are going.  Some paying attention to each other.  Down the road the opposite way a pair of headlights can be seen.  They are dim, as they belong to a car from the 20's.

Panel 2:  The headlights are growing closer, and we can see that it is a car, now.  Some of the girls may take notice of them.

Panel 3:  The car is pulling up near the girls.  They are moving in to greet the drivers.  Inside the cars are two regular looking men wearing formal attire.  White jackets and slacks.  Reference pictures should soon be available.  Both wearing driving helmets and goggles.  The man not driving is waving to the girls.  His name is Ardad, and the driver's name is Saalah.

ARDAD:                                  HELLO, CHILDREN.

Panel 4:  The men are getting out of the car.  Ardad removing his headgear.  They have the attention of all of the girls.  Saalah is watching the burning building, and Ardad is paying attention to the girls with a warm smile.

ARDAD:                                  IT LOOKS AS IF THERE'S BEEN A TRAGEDY.

A GIRL:                                   THE BUILDING HAS BURNED UP, AND HEADMISTRESS ASTARTE WITH IT.

Panel 5:  Looking at Ardad and Saalah.  They are looking at each other knowingly.

SAALAH:                                ASTARTE?  A SHAME.

Panel 6:  Ardad and Saalah looking to the girls again. Ardad with his smile back.

ARDAD:                                  WE ARE LOOKING FOR A GIRL.  PRUDENCE.  IS SHE ONE OF YOUR CLASSMATES?

Page 12

Panel 1:  Looking at the girls as they speak to Ardad.  They all seem eager to please.

GIRL 1:                                    SHE'S ALREADY GONE.

GIRL 2:                                    YES.  LEFT WITH A WOLF.

Panel 2:  Ardad and Saalah share a look again.  This time a dark one.  Ardad's friendly demeanor is gone.

ARDAD:                                  A…WOLF.

SAALAH:                                THEN IT IS TOO LATE.

Panel 3: Ardad speaks to Saalah.  Keeping his dark mood.

ARDAD:                                  NO.  NOT YET.  THERE ARE OTHERS WE CAN CALL FORTH.

Panel 4: Ardad looks over the girls, keeping the dark expression on his face.

ARDAD:                                  IN FACT…

Panel 5:  Ardad is back to his warm smile, only there is something sinister about his face now.  The girls all are looking at him with hopeful smiles.

ARDAD:                                  CHILDREN.  HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY A NEW GAME?

Panel 6:  Zooming in on Ardad's face.  It has now taken a demonic form.  Mouth curling into a smile that stretches unnaturally across his face.  Eyebrows slanting into a horrific expression of evil.

ARDAD:                                  A GAME CALLED 'SACRIFICIAL SUMMONING!'

Page 13

Panel 1:  Prudence and Fenris walking together on a dark road.  The road runs along a wooded area full of small to medium trees.  Behind them the sky still glows from the fire.  Prudence is looking in the direction of the fire.

PRUDENCE:                           WHAT IS THAT?  SCREAMING?  THE GIRLS--

FENRIS:                                  IT IS THE SINGING OF BIRDS.  NOTHING MORE.

Panel 2:  Looking at Prudence’s face as she looks upwards to the trees.  Fenris is looking at her emotionlessly.

PRUDENCE:  BIRDS?  THEY SOUND IN DISTRESS!

FENRIS:                                  BIRDS ARE DOOMED TO LIVE THEIR LIVES IN DANGER.  THE CREATURES THAT HUNT THEM ARE MANY.

Panel 3:  Prudence is stopped and is looking around worried.  Fenris is moving closer to her to get her to keep walking.

PRUDENCE:                           CREATURES?

FENRIS:                                  YOU NEED NOT FEAR.  NOTHING IN THIS WORLD WILL HURT YOU.  YOU ARE UNDER MY PROTECTION.

Page 14

Panel 1:  Prudence talking to Fenris.  A sad look in her eyes.

Panel 2:  Looking at Prudence’s face.  She is sad while she talks to Fenris.

PRUDENCE:                           I WOULD ALWAYS WISH AT NIGHT THAT SHE WOULD SEND SOMEONE TO RESCUE ME.  DID SHE SEND YOU, FENRIS?  DID SHE SEND YOU TO SAVE ME?

Panel 3:  Fenris is looking at Prudence.

FENRIS:

Panel 4:  Fenris is turning to continue walking.

FENRIS:                                  NO.

Panel 5:  Fenris is walking by a place in the woods where there is a wide spot that they can fit through.  He is looking at it, and Prudence is following up behind him.

FENRIS:                                  WE'LL NEED TO GET OFF OF THE ROAD HERE.  THERE IS A CLEARING WHERE YOU CAN GET SOME SLEEP.

Panel 6:  Fenris is walking into the woods, with Prudence behind him.

PRUDENCE:                           FENRIS?

FENRIS:                                  YES?

Panel 7:  Fenris and Prudence still walking through the woods.

PRUDENCE:                           WHY DID YOU RESCUE ME?

FENRIS:                                  YOU ASK TOO MANY QUESTIONS.

Page 15

PRUDENCE:                           IT IS QUITE LOVELY, FENRIS.  AND PERHAPS A LITTLE SCARY.

Panel 2:  Prudence standing in the middle of the clearing.  She is looking to the ground.

FENRIS:                                  EUEUCOYOTL.  THE STORY WAS NOT FOR YOU.  WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?

EUEUCOYOTL:  WE WERE RESTING JUST AS YOU AND YOUR FRIEND ARE.

Panel 5:  Eueucoyotl is approaching Fenris as Fenris talks to him.

Page 18

TYBALT:                                 SO THIS IS THE GIRL.  AY, OLD MAN?

Panel 2:  Fenris is looking at Tybalt menacingly.  Tybalt is shying from him, but not in terror.

Panel 4:  Eueucoyotl is speaking to Fenris.  He seems concerned, if a coyote can look concerned.

FENRIS:                                  WERE YOU NOT A TRICKSTER, EUEUCOYOTL, I WOULD BE MOVED BY YOUR WORDS.

Panel 3:  Tybalt is walking toward Fenris again, smarmy cat look on his face.
