Vijay's Glasswork
Home

Vijay N. Kharkar was born on March 16th, 1940 in India.  He started showing his artistic talents at an early age, with an interest in pencil drawing.  Both his parents being accomplished artists, encouraged and nourished his talents.  During his school years he won numerous awards for his drawings.

Vijay took up water color and oil painting in high school and mastered both these mediums by the time he had finished college.  Later, during his career in the Indian Armed Forces he added charcoal drawing and fret work to his already multicolored artistic palette.

Vijay had his first one-man show in Pune, India, in 1990.  This was where he presented one of his unique creations; three dimensional decorative lamps created with a mixed medium of fret work and oil painting.  During subsequent commercial exhibitions he presented a number of new concepts for interior decoration with fret work.

Vijay first tried his hand at glass engraving in 1997, and was fascinated with the possibilities of this medium.  He experimented extensively with this medium while working on both flat sheet glass as well as tableware and has now honed his skills to a level of mastery that is rare in this difficult medium.  He has completed a variety of  glass engravings which include portraits, landscapes, and pictures of famous scupltures.  His latest experiments with this medium have yielded stunning three dimensional engravings.
