After the government of the Popular Party of Spain foolishly lied to the Spanish people, insisting that the Basque separatist organisation ETA was responsible for the terrorist attacks against the Spanish railways, and after al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attacks, citing the continued presence of Spanish troops in Iraq, the Spanish people said "NO!" to war without end, and elected a government which has promised to remove Spanish troops from Iraq. Shortly thereafter, The Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, supposed cells of Al Qaeda and those in charge of attacks in Madrid, suspended operations in Europe.
Unlike United States President Bush, the Spanish people don’t confuse the war against terrorism with the war in Iraq: they clearly understand that the latter hinders the former, as continued foreign occupation draws recruits and support to al-Qaeda throughout the Muslim world. The Spanish people also understand that the former government followed the discredited policy of Fascist dictator Francisco Franco of equating the legitimate national asperations of the Basque people with terrorism, and it is our hope that the new government of the Socialist Workers’ Party of Spain and all parties to the Basque struggle for self-determination will be ready to walk the path of dialogue.
We join the call of Cuban President Fidel Castro Ruz for the Spanish government to immediately withdraw the Spanish Legion from Iraq: they have no part to play in the future of Iraq, and their continued presence there serves no legitimate purpose.
