In 2000, we published an analysis, The Mexican and US Elections: Legitimate, but Inauthentic
It seems to us that little changed since then: indeed, inauthenticity has been institutionalized.
We have delayed this analysis until the results of all the elections of interest to us became clear: now that this is the case, let us enumerate:
United States of America: This election set the pattern, with dubious technological “advances” enshrining the victory of the Power of Money and of Death. Just as in 2000, a “swing state,” in this case, Ohio, made the difference; just as in 2000, this difference was questionable. Since 2000, evidence has emerged that Bush in fact stole that election in Florida, using sophisticated versions of the techniques that robbed Cuauhtemoc Cardenas of his victory in 1988 (should it surprise anyone that a Texan learned how to steal an election from Mexico?) Since Democrat candidate John Kerry conceded the election, the evidence has emerged that the Republican-controlled office of the Secretary of State of Ohio engaged in behaviour worthy of a Porfirista cacique. So, once again, Bush “wins” in an election that is “legitimate,” but inauthentic.
Ukraine: The Power of Money and Death wins again, with the contest going to the more skillful cheater. The Governments of the USA and Russian Federation confront one-another in the Ukraine, and, with the help of the European Union, the US-backed Yushchenko overwhelms the Russian-supported Yanukovitch. Now Ukraine is on course to join the European Union and NATO: already, the United States Government is exerting pressure to allow it to influence the politics of the Russian Federation as well.
Venezuela: This time, the Power of Money and Death loses, despite exerting itself strenuously: already, the Colombian Government, which this power controls, is being used as a front to destabilize the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela led by President Hugo Chavez. This strategy is backfiring, however, and the country that exports more oil to the United States than does any other is being forced into alliances with strategic competitors and adversaries of the United States, as are other progressive governments in South America, which are allied with the Bolivarians.
Palestine: In the face of the overwhelming power of US Money and Israeli Death, the Palestinians elect to curtail their own contribution to such death. This hardly satisfies the Israelis, however, who are bent on the destruction of Palestine. They have their counterparts in those Palestinians equally dedicated to the destruction of Israel; between them, the expressed political will of the Palestinian people to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with the acceptance of partition of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states counts for little.
Iraq: The last of the 2004-2005 elections, its results cannot be controlled by the US-led occupation. Of the three communities that make up modern Iraq, only the Kurds have a reason to support the occupation, as Kurdish autonomy has been a side-effect of it. Even Kurds, however, know that the occupation is in place to serve US, not Kurdish, interests, and if the US Government decides it is in the US interest to abandon the Kurds to Turkish hostility, it will do so. Meanwhile, there are very few Iraqi Arabs left with any illusions about whose interests the US-led occupation serves: the Shiites now have a candidate for Prime Minister who has the blessing of Imam Ali al-Sistani, the supreme religious authority of the Shia; the Association of (Sunni) Muslim Scholars, which supported the anti-occupation insurgency, now urges Sunnis to insist on participation in the upcoming Iraqi Constitutional Convention. Sunnis were encouraged to vote, and did so, in Syria; the Shiite cause is being supported by the Iranian Government; so is it a surprise that there are those in the Bush Administration pushing to extend the US occupation to Syria and Iran?
Now we live in the times that are directly consequent to the “legitimate,” but inauthentic US elections of 2000: the equally inauthentic Mexican elections of 2000 will yield what will happen in 2006, when the US mid-term Congressional elections also occur. If the US continues on its aggressive path, we can expect war between an open US/Israeli and Syrian/Iranian alliance, at least, as well as exacerbated conflict between Colombia and the rest of South America. The results of these conflicts, if they do come to pass, will weigh heavily on US and Mexican voters in 2006, as well as upon the entire world.
