Both the Provisional Irish Republican Army and the Zapatista Army of National Liberation have renounced armed struggle. They have both committed to non-violent political struggle: therefore, we are obliged to state our position:
First: we applaud the courageous decisions of the PIRA and EZLN, and support their struggles for liberty, justice, democracy, and human rights. Specifically, we support the Zapatista “Other Campaign,” and look forward to a Constitutional Consultation. We support those who offer alternatives, such as the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, to the Mexican people. And we look at the transition from British to Irish sovereignty in the North of Ireland as a model of what can be accomplished in Aztlan: a Mexican Constitutional Convention would enrich this process.
Second: we have never engaged in armed struggle. We maintain the CCDN to defend ourselves and the communities we represent, but have never been called upon to do so: indeed, both the Raramuri and Dineh, indigenous communities within our area of operations, have specifically ruled out armed struggle, and we respect their decisions.
Third: we support the right of self-defence against armed aggression, and will continue to maintain the CCDN in that capacity until we know that it is no longer needed.
Liberty! Justice! Democracy! Human Rights!
