Shortly after its independence the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania.

The United Republic of Tanzania is located in Eastern Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean between Kenya and Mozambique.  It also borders the following countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.

Tanzania contains the highest point in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, 5,895m, and is bordered by three of the largest lakes on the continent: Lake Victoria (the world's second-largest freshwater lake) in the north, Lake Tanganyika (the world's second deepest) in the west and Lake Nyasa in the southwest.

 

The population of Tanzania is 36,766,356 and the two official languages are Swahili and English.
