The Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal, meaning crown Palace, is a mausoleum that houses the grave of queen Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. The queen's real name was Arjumand Banu. The tomb stands near the city of Agra, in northern India, on the south bank of the river Jamuna.

When Mumtaz mahal was alive, she took four promises from the emperor. First, that he should build the Taj to symbolize their love, second - that he should marry again, third - that he should be kind to their children and fourth - that he should visit the tomb on her death anniversary.

The Taj Mahal has been build exactly as conceived by Shah Jahan. The construction of Taj Mahal began in 1631 and was completed in 22 years employing 20,000 workers and at a cost of 32 million rupees. It is said that Shah Jahan had the hands of all his workmen chopped off so none could duplicate this spectacular structure.

It is made of white marble and rests on a platform of red sandstone. The Taj is pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and sparkling golden when the moon shines.

The Taj stands in a garden. Its central dome rises to a height of 213 feet. Minarets at each corner are 162.5 feet each decorated with inlaid design of flowers and calligraphy using precious gems.
