Birzebbuga is an authentic fishing village, full of the local colourful fishing boats, the Luzzu, a strudy seaboat that some say owes its origins to Phoenician design.
From where did the name of the village originated? The village of Birzebbuga lies in the South East of the coast of Malta. The name of the village probably originated from the word 'Bur' which means field and from the other word 'zebbuga' which means olives. So most probably the name comes from the fields of olive trees that used to be cultivated around in these areas. In the outskirts of the village of Bugia lies a very important icon in the history of the island of Malta. In fact one can find the cave of darkness or locally known as Ghar Dalam. In this cave it is believed that the very first inhabitants on Malta used to live. The patron saint of Birzebbugia is St Peter in Chains. There are  temples of the copper age, and also some other remains from the Bronze Age where prehistoric people used to live. Other important and places of interest that one can find in the village of Birzebbuga are: -
Ghar Dalam (Cave and Museum)
This cave is a veritable depository of semi-fossilized remains and extinct species such as dwarf elephants and hippopotami which roamed the island some 250,000 years ago, ostensibly when it was still part of the Africa land mass.

Borg in-Nadur Temple
These temple ruins are situated in the rich archaeological southern area of Malta. They are important because they appear to reveal not only a four-apse temple (c.2000 B.C.), but also a fortified, Bronze-age domestic settlement. The remains of a large, defensive walls lie nearby. The wall runs across the head of a promontory between two valleys leading down to St George's and Pretty Bay. Traces of the Bronze Age huts were discovered lying just behind the wall.
