Squall was orphaned at a very early age and as such has become very untrusting of everyone. He believe's only he can look after himself and he doesn't need anyone to watch his back. At times he can appear selfish and as if he doesn't care. But Squall always looks after his friends and even though he does not how to express his feelings adores Rinoa very much.

Squall is forced to join the battle against the rival garden and to face his old enemy Seifer (whom is responsible for the scar on his face) Cid decides he should lead the fight against Edea, much to Squall's disappointment. Squall feels as if he has the world on his shoulders and if constantly weights on his mind. What he doesnt realise is that he needs to open up and talk to his friends and to Rinoa. He keeps all his anger inside him and becomes abrupt and snappy when people ask him why. He feels no one understands the emptiness he feels inside, the others are orphans too but they have come to terms with it. Squall is still only a teenager and as his friends always tell him, he needs to act like one.
