Very little information is known about the Special Security Bureau (SSB) other than it's strength, which is at two battalions worth. Apart from being a specialized commando outfit, it also an intelligence agency. Likely to be used behind enemy line operations. By 20 August 2001, over fifteen SSB platoons were deployed along the 250 km-long Indo-Nepal border, as Maoist rebels from Nepal are intensifying their activities along the Indo-Nepal border in the face of an onslaught by Nepalese armed forces in their traditional influence area.
