When I read somewhere that I could improve the sound of a new vocal pre-amp by replacing the existing Chinese made tubes with some old NOS (new old stock tube), I immediately started a search.
After finding some suppliers, I purchased a few of these gems and sure enough, my moderately priced pre-amp sounded awesome! It simply snowballed after that. Shortly thereafter, I put some in my guitar setup and heard an immediate improvement , simply a no brainer! I have purchased two pre-amps since then and the first thing I did when I got them home was replace the tubes.
As the demand for tubes started to dwindle in the late seventies/early eighties, many companies stopped making tubes or contracted out to Chinese or Russian companies that could make there tubes for less. Consequently, the quality of the tubes began to suffer. The more I hear the old tubes next to the new tube productions, the more I find this to be true. I have posted some examples of some of the tubes I have in stock; some for sale, others I just can't part with. I have included valuable information for many of these tubes because when it comes to buying vintage tubes, it really helps to have some knowledge of what is available, especially when deciding which tubes would best suit your needs.I am located in Port Moody British Columbia,for those who would like to come and hand pic the tubes they want. |
