Don Clark was the foremost hockey historian in the United
States. He traveled his well loved Minnesota preaching the gospel of
amateur hockey for well over 65 years. In his boyhood days in Faribault,
Minnesota, Don competed in football, hockey and baseball. He was the founder of MAHA, Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association and received the Lester Patrick Award and in 1978. Don was enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame and authored the History of Gopher Hockey. He was a contributor to historical hockey facts in the Encyclopedia Britannica.
HOCKEY TIMELINE
1890-Hockey gloves were introduced.
1893-The Montreal goalie still used a regular stick.
1896-The Detroit College of Medicine Hockey Team players wore clamp on skates, sticks were one pice, football pants were worn, football shin pads were wornon the outside of their pants.
1896-Baltimore, Maryland- first goalie pads worn.
1900-Early goalie pads were from the game of cricket.
1901-Winnepeg Victorians were the first to wear tube skates.
1915-16-San Francisco Yacht Hockey Club had indoor artificial ice. The players wore tube skates and long basketball pants with no padding.
1916-17-Some Boston players wore long gauntlet leather gloves.
1920-USA Olympic Team players wore basketball knee pads.
1922-23-St Paul, Minnesota hockey team members of the USAHA wore white knee length pants with sticks reinforcing the lining for protection.
1925-First leather goalie pads worn by goalie from the University
of Southern California.
1928-Women's Hockey teams at Carlton College in Minnesota wore skirts and football shoulder pads on their knees.
1936-University of Minnesota co-captains Wilkinson and Mitchell wore baseball belly guard leather pants, and padded gloves that were re-made first baseman gloves.
1940-Minnesota native, Frank Brimsek of the Boston Bruins, was the first well equipped goalie.
1960-Olympic team players wore a helmet for the first time.
