Of course, I haven't seen them in a little while because they don't play around by me as much as they used to, but I was totally disappointed when Victor rejoined the group. Not because he's not good-he is. But part of the joy and excitement that used to be a Violent Femmes concert for me was the total spontaneity of what was going to be played. There was such a variety of songs, no two concerts were the same. Yeah, you'd always have the same five played every time, but they'd seem fresh mixed in with the other lesser-known songs. There's no doubt that those five songs get the crowd going, which is also part of the experience. But the other songs are just as good, if not better, if people would just give it a chance. Once upon a time, I was one of those people who only knew a few songs and I had to see them played live to really understand and appreciate those other songs that I usually just skipped over. Sometimes you just don't "get it" unless you hear them played live. I've seem the Violent Femmes somewhere between 10 and 20 times (I've lost count) but I don't know if I would do that anymore, even if they did play in Wisconsin more often. To me, when I see them now it just seems like they're resigned to the fact that they have to cater to people who don't care to roam beyond the typical top-40 mentality and try something new. It's a little depressing. I never used to think of them as an 80's band, but they kinda seem like that to me now and it makes me really sad. It would be a total joy for me to pay a higher ticket price to hear some of my old favorites. I saw them about a month or 2 ago here in columbus, oh. Between the same playlist set and the annoying frat f*cks... I left early. And, the Femmes are/were my favorite band.. but no new album, playing the same songs... after 20 years of listening, getting a bit stale... Aaron adriggers@columbus.rr.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Violent Femmes 4th Street Live -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is much speculation on whether or not the Violent Femmes are has-beens or not. On one hand, they are responsible for one of the most celebrated albums of the 80's, with several favorite bar singalongs. On the other hand, that's pretty much all they put out. To be fair, their album Hallowed Ground was pretty kick-ass as well, just not as kick-ass as the self-titled Violent Femmes. To set the record strait, the Violent Femmes still very much kick ass, and are not has beens. I had not yet graced Louisville's 4th Street Live with my presence, and I figured that it would take something like the Violent Femmes to get me down there. As usual, I was right. To sum up 4th Street Live, take a one city block on 4th street, put bars everywhere on that block, add an actual Hard Rock Cafe to make it seem like it's worth going to, and fill it with stupid drunk people, and a ton of really slutty girls (if you happen to be one of those slutty girls, I'm sorry, but your mother would be ashamed...). Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the acoustics are terrible, because it is between two buildings in downtown Louisville in in the middle of the street. Okay, enough bitching. The Violent Femmes are crowd pleaser's, and played pretty much what every one wanted to hear, including all but three tracks off of Violent Femmes (Please Do Not Go, Good Feeling, and Ugly). Other songs played were Country Death Song (highlight of the show for me, despite being the second song played), Black Girls, Color Me Once (from the Crow Soundtrack), American Music, Waiting for the Bus, Jesus Walking on the Water, and I Held Her in My Arms, which Gordon Gano revealed was his father's favorite Femmes song, but his mother's most hated... A horn section was brought out for Black Girls, and a couple other songs. Another interesting thing about the show was that there were fourteen bass solos, and 3 guitar solos. No complaints here, but that just shows you how the Violent Femmes kick it. ...and yes, there was a drum solo, which drummer Victor Delorenzo called a drum feature, because the drums don't play themselves, dammit!
