American Music will be the temporary electronic hide-a-way of Victor Delorenzo, founding member of the Violent Femmes, current solo musician, actor with Milwaukee's experimental theater group Theatre X, and owner of The Past Office Recording Salon. Victor has offered to answer any question you want to ask him so get your brains fired up and shoot those questions on over to ASAP! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tour Info - Who's Going Where -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wow! Look at all these upcoming tour dates! It sounds like a lot of people are planning VF road trips already so those of you who have a show coming to a town near you please be sure to send in the local info for the road-warriors. And road warriors, email in where you're headed and I will post a "Who's Going Where" list. It looks like a good summer to organize some VF caravans and tailgate parties. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE:i don't care, i don't care, how heavy or how skinny -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nothing stirs the soul quite like the melodic sounds of the Violent Femmes coming from the TV or big screen. As Josh points out (I don't care, I don't care, how heavy or how skinny, June 1) the Femmes have been so fittingly placed in yet another medium to the masses. "Fat, " in Supersize me is just one such case (thanks for the heads up Josh, I wanted to see it just because, now I have a REAL reason to view). For more excellent Femmes' tracks check out the soundtrack to The Crow (Color Me Once), Grosse Point Blank Vol 1 (Blister In the Sun), Grosse Pointe Blank Vol 2 More Music from the Movie (Blister 2000--a kick ass rendition). Also, my fancy was REALLY tickled when 2-3 years ago Mercedes-Benz used "It's Gonna Rain" for one of their convertible commercials.....LOVED IT!!! Guys, I saw the "American Tour 2004" in Columbus, Ohio (your only destination, HA! Gordon is quite the cheerleader BTW)...and I can't wait till the third weekend in August when my wife and I can see you at two (count 'em TWO venues) in Milwaukee and Chicago.... Yours in music, Michael Jacobs mjacobs@defiance.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE:Weird Belgium Concert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I regards to funny or strange things happening at femmes shows, I've seen the following: Gordon stopping the song and laughing because no one was singing along in the accapella part of Blister. He scolded the audience and told us we had one more chance to get it right. We did. At the end of the song, the whole band was laughing because they said in their entire history that had never happened before. Another time, a guy jumped on the stage and started singing Kiss Off into Gordon's mic during BITS. He was escorted off the stage and Gordon came back to the mic and said the young man must have been confused. I heard them do a song called Santa Catalina during a show in honor of being close to Catalina Island off the So Cal coast. I also saw a guy jump on stage and steal their Green Bay Pakers banner. Thats all I remember off the top of my head. SCPGAMEDIA@aol.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE:Weird Belgium Concert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A few years ago, I saw them in concert at this little theater in Oshkosh, Wisconsin where everyone sat. No one really stood up, but there were a few people ballroom dancing in the aisles during the slow songs. I think they were drunk, but it was kinda cool. Very surreal. And Gordon didn't yell at anyone, if I remember, but the band took an intermission half-way through, and there was a super-drunk, very obnoxious guy sitting in one of the balconies over the stage. He wouldn't shut-up. The guy thought he was being funny, or something. He yelled a lot during the concert, but when the tech guys were tuning the guitars before the guys came out for the 2nd half, the guy went nuts with the screaming. I think everyone wanted to go up there and kill him. But the band came out again, and the guy still wouldn't stop, so Brian let out an ear-splitting scream into the mic for the guy to "Shut the F*** up!" Everyone cheered wildly, and the concert and ballroom dancing continued minus the drunk freak's idiotic commentary. AHHHH...I miss those guys! We sure are looking forward to the show at the Milwaukee Zoo here in Wisconsin. (Playing at the Zoo should prove to be pretty interesting too, come to think of it!) Julie pish_tish@yahoo.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE:Weird Belgium Concert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i've laughed the hardest at all the stories brian has told over the years before breaking into dance motherfucker... he can come up with some weird ass shit... or what about when gordon was into state songs? i went cross contry that summer and know i remember him doing minnesota, illinois, wi (of course) virginia, MO, Georgia and orgeon i think. now that was whack. or how about vic... romancing mic stands. whoa baby.... Eric wisconsinsane16@hotmail.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE:Weird Belgium Concert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Myfavourite concert memory for the VF's is from the Blind Leading the Naked era. I think the show was Leeds. I remember Brian said something reguarding their latest album coming up and that before the show that night a writer had asked the band in interview who was the blind and who was the naked. Then he just corked off and began to play the next song. The crowd screamed, "Come on... who's blind and who's naked?" Gordon piped up and said he was the blind and some man from the crew or something started shedding clothes and ran on stage screaming "I am the naked... I am the naked" and running round the spot. Of course the rest of the show was near pandemonium after that. I remember my mates and I joining in choruses of "I am the naked... I am the naked" in response to some odd thing or stupid question for years after that night! Here's another weird tidbit to pass. I was reading an interview today with Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen. He is an angry little has been but he did pass on a rather nice comment about VF's. "McCulloch's near ceaseless self-promotion clearly masks a seam of insecurity. Throughout our hour-long chat he repeatedly lays into the music press, in particular the NME. Still stung at not having been included in their review of THE American music festival of 2003 in California the previous month, he seizes the opportunity to vent his spleen. "We easily stole the show, we blew everyone off stage, except maybe for The Violent Femmes," he thunders. "Then they wrote about Duran Duran, for Christ's sake. Mind you, they've had it in for us probably from the day I said 'the NME's a load of shite and it needs the Bunnymen to be cool'. I can't help it if they hold a grudge." I can't imagine EATB could hold a candle to Gano's ass methane but it was still a nod all the same. F.
