It burned. It burned deep in his throat and high in his chest. The regret and humiliation burned a hole right through him. #Gods, he must think I am such an idiot. He probably pities me. I hate myself. Why am I so stupid?# He knew the answer. That was when the beeping tore into his soul. That fucking beeping that meant another mission was calling for some of the remaining chunks of his soul. The warmth that was Heero left him, and he knew, just knew that he would never feel it again, that he didn’t deserve it. Gods that last fucking mission was sooo bad. He wasn’t ready for another. Something deep inside him told him this one would be trouble as well, but he knew he had to go anyway. A sense of impeding doom washed over him as Heero told him that they had to leave right then. He numbly got up and got ready. Duo was ready in less than ten minutes, and they were off without so much a single word from him. He could already tell he was annoying Heero like he did everyone else. So, he kept his mouth shut. Duo could feel the tears stinging his eyelids as he climbed into Shini, and they were off. ~~~~~ Duo woke up in the dark, his head aching, and he felt cold all over. The smell of dirt mixed with blood tainted the air. What had happened? It all went by so fast. They ran into a massive squad of Oz Leos, and the next thing he knew... he was there... #That’s right... Oh shit!!! He did it again!!!# "Gods Heero, don’t die." Duo grabbed the portable lantern from under the seat in Shini and turned it on. Bright, cold, light filled the small cave, and he could see every cut and bruise on Heero. He set to work patching him up as best he could before using smelling sauce to bring him to. He feared that Heero could be in shock, and it would be best for him to be awake if that were the case. Heero’s eyes blinked open as his teeth grit together in pain. Heero’s eyes were a deep soul-retching shade of black. The color made him look like death itself. It would be an understatement to call it creepy. Tears filled Duo’s eyes and dribbled down his cheeks as he tried to compose himself, his own eyes filled with swirls of bright yellow and true and deep blue. As Heero looked up at him, his eyes softened, and swirls of violet, blue, and light lime joined the overpowering black in his eyes. It was downright freaky. "H-Heero?" "Duo... What’s a guy gotta do to get some water around here?" Heero’s voice was weak and hoarse. Duo grinned and poured some water from the canteen into Heero’s mouth. Heero coughed and sputtered a bit, grasping his ribs slightly. "Duo... relax, I’ll live." Duo plastered on one of his usual baka grins. "Who says I’m worried?" "...Your eyes do." "No fair! You... *sigh*" "Thank you for patching me up." "How come you get to know the meaning, and I don’t?" Heero sighed, his eyes now losing their violet and lime tints, only to be replaced by huge swirls of yellow. He knew it would come to this eventually, and that scared him to death. "I... I guess I owe you a full explanation. Ne Duo?" "You sure do." "Well, let me start at the beginning. The doctors wanted a drug that could be injected into their enemies that would allow them to read their emotions. In a way, it would be like the ultimate lie detector. They decided to test this idea on everybody’s favorite guinniepig. Is it me, or am I starting to sound like you? You gave me some pain killers didn’t you?" Duo nods, grinning. "Baka." "Are you going to continue or not?" "What else is there to say?" "What do the different colors mean?" Heero bit his lip, a bit more yellow swirling into his eyes, the black slowly fading away. "Let’s see..." ***** Duo: Well, that was annoying!!! Plude: I haven’t seen you guys around lately helping. So, don’t complain. Duo: *sweatdropps* ===== laters, plude
