I Cannot Watch The Gate For You

I Cannot Watch The Gate For You

Don’t make me stand at the gate,
I’m not a willing welcoming committee.
Don’t make me stand at the gate
I will turn Death away, given the chance.

I will not be the one to watch
For the passage of the lightning white mare
I will not be the one to stand
and open the way for the rider with the scythe
Don’t ask this of me, not now my dear
Don’t ask of me this terrible price.
I will not watch the gate for her,
I will not welcome death and the horse that she does ride.

My strength is yours, know this.
My will is yours, know this.
My love a shield to keep you safe
My arms to hold you free of pain.
You are dear to me, as all know,
My kin in this life as before
I will not watch the gate and welcome in
The one who comes to call so soon.
Your time comes too soon,
I told you long ago it would,
and now the foreordained comes true
But I cannot watch the gate for you.
I cannot watch through tear filled eyes.
I cannot watch the gate for you.
