Simply, a guide, a guardian, a personification of the gate that they are said to guard. A gatekeeper is many things, most of what they truely are defies definition.
the higest ranking gatekeepers prove to be spiritualists who at some point in their life prior to the designation has had some personal near death experience. This is not necessarily their own life/death but can also be that of a soul kin. Although not all near death experiences will result in someone becoming a “gatekeeper” a gatekeepr of multiple designations must have had at least one such experience.

A Gatekeeper is one who has some inherent psychic ability, be it just a sensitivity to the loudest of supernatural noises, the foggiest of abilities of divining the future, or the soothing touch of a healer. Whatever gift, large or small that they have, the up close, and immensely personal experience that they have with Death (usually a conversation ) unlocks a wholly unsuspected aspect within., setting them apart from the rest of mankind, on a path askew.

Those who embrace the gifts granted by the highest of Gatekeepers, Death, and undertake the guardianship of all 10 gates find themselves devoting their lives to consoling those who pass, those who wish to follow, and healing those who have come nearly as close as they, but who have further works ahead. They are not merely restricted to using their gifts for the betterment of man, but will reach out and embrace both animal and plant entities when the situation suits. So too they are not restricted to the gate between here and after, but can be seen to guard also the gate of Before, and here and acting as a guide and aide to all travelers.
For individual gates, the characteristics are like those of each direction, for the dual directions a combination of the cardnial directional traits defines the individual.

Gatekeepers span the continents, sometimes found singularly, it is more common that they instinctively seek others of their kind. When paired gatekeepers are amazing to observe in any aspect of life. The world is changed by them, and is different for them. They move in a world apart from most, separate, mostly unseen and yet tangible. They are an unseen network of support for those who are touched by life’s many faces, and its many fears. These are the visions, the experiences, and the thoughts of one.
