Back to Violette's Corner
The Crash

It was late last night
as we traveled down the road,
when the headlights so bright
shone on a truck with sign "wide load."
I saw it skid before us,
I saw it come to rest,
and then I watched in horror
as the airbag hit his chest.
The car, it finally stopped,
though it rolled a few times first,
then my eyes confirmed my fears,
it couldn't have been worse.
I crawled to where he was
and held him in my arms,
knowing that no longer
could I keep him safe from harm.
I looked upon his face
and kissed him for our last,
and time seemed to stop
as he quietly passed.
I awoke the next morning,
in my chest I felt the pain,
and it took some moments
before I realized nothing had changed.
I had my normal breakfast,
followed my daily routine,
but all through the day
I kept thinking of that dream.
