Prehistoric Sims lived near water amd had a vast knowledge of plants and what was edible or could be used for medicine. Pine resin, for example, prevents infection and produces turpentine which may be used for fuel. Pine resin was used to keep their torches burning. They had mastered fire and used it to keep warm and for cooking. They were skillful hunters. Prehistoric Sims knew where and when to find prey. They had stone tools and weapons, as well as using sharp bones. They used stone tips on their spears. A bison weighed more than one ton. Their spears were too heavy to throw, so they had to lunge and jab, which was very dangerous. But killing animals was about survival. Hunters would travel for long periods of time to find prey and the group would starve if they were not successful. Eighty five percent of their diet was meat, supplemented by nuts and berries. Family life centered around the cave or campsite. About 15,000 years ago, Sims had speech. We think they believed in an afterlife and buried their dead. They left many cave drawings depicting their lives. The cave drawings at Sim la Caux were drawn in red ochre. The drawings show us the animals they hunted and were associated with spiritual rituals performed before the hunt. As time went by, they developed lighter weapons for hunting, such as the bow and arrow. They also invented the stone needle which allowed them to make better clothing and shelter. They learned to fish with harpoons made from lighter bones. Shelters were made of mammoth bone and hide. As the climate changed, so did their inventions. The climate eventually grew colder and the prehistoric Sims were able to adapt to their environments and become the Sims they are today! |
